It's one better than an F-4 Phantom, innit.

BrianW26 Apr 2013 8:31 a.m. PST

It's the improved Iranian version, I'm sure. You know how they go us one better on everything.

Could they have got confused with the Thunderbolt : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saegeh

CorpCommander26 Apr 2013 9:16 a.m. PST

They mean the F-4 Phantom 2. The F-5 was the Tiger, a light daytime only fighter that could also do a ground attack. It is cool looking, if you like lawn darts.

Also, check this out: link

Apparently Iranian jets were convinced to not attack an American drone due to armed escort. Not long before UAVs operate with UCVs I think.

Maybe they are flying this version of the Phantom…

I thought the US captured Baghdad Bob, the Iraqi Information Minister? What's he doing working for the Iranians?!?

Iranians fly F-4s and F-5s someone has confused the names my bets on Fox News

The press ia always very bad at identification of military vehicles. I remember an AP photo of Nicuargian jets nand tanks, photo was Mi 8's and BTR 60's.

Mako1126 Apr 2013 12:38 p.m. PST

Just a typo, that someone who doesn't know anything about aircraft made.

AP wrote the story, so their error, but Fox didn't correct it.

No, an F-5 phantom is when you think you see an F-5 but it's not really there at all….

GROSSMAN26 Apr 2013 1:31 p.m. PST

They should just stick with the dumb civilian name of "fighter jet" and not try to be cute.

vtsaogames26 Apr 2013 2:12 p.m. PST

I recall when reporters during Gulf War I could not keep track of platoons/companies/battalions/brigades etc. and had little or no idea who ranked who.

One station hired Luttwak as talking head military expert. He could not conceal his contempt for many of the reporters. He wasn't hired again.

Katzbalger26 Apr 2013 6:10 p.m. PST

Since the article says two crew dead, it was an F-4 Phantom (the F-5 is a single-seat jet).

So, how difficult would it be for a news organization as big as AP to actually hire someone who knows something about military stuff?

They're not hard to find, but most of them don't appreciate being told to shut the Bleeped text up when they try to say something positive about the military.
