I mostly agree with these comments.
(SPOILER ALERT if you have not seen the episode).

From the same link:

As it turns out, the traditional Castithan punishment for desertion is a very slow, public execution (with an elaborate system of weights, pulleys and rocks; it's pretty awesome).

Torture is not awesome, I stopped reading his observations at this point; sounds like a bit of a tool to me.

Angel Barracks, I think you'll find that torture is an effective way of getting accurate information, afterall it helped the authorities uncover 300 witches in Britain alone ;)
However in this case it makes a twisted sense, as it gives the "coward" a chance to redeem his honour by enduring something worse publicly. On the whole I think Defiance has potential, shame (for me anyhow) that Joss Whedon isn't on board, as I loved Firefly and its down in the mud brand of sci-fi.

Maybe, however I think that anyone who is in awe of people being hurt has issues.
Does he think murder and rape also awesome?

Torture is also an effective way of getting people to say anything to stop the pain, truthful or not.
Though I think you appreciate this if I understand the witch comment correctly.

Angel Barracks, yes I do, don't worry. I think the commentator (I hope!) had thought of the same principal of getting redemption I had and thought it was an interesting detail, rather than a great way to keep standards up. Then again he may well think "human centipede 1 & 2" are great pieces of entertainment.

I am worried about Googling those references…

:O

I believe they are as bad as they sound, saw mabe 20mins of the first one (I think on SYFY channel) that was enough, more than enough. But then I shy away from films like Saw (1-6) or Hostel, just don't get why you'd make or watch them.

Indeed, horror as in psychological horror yes, gore and loud noises no.

@Angel Barracks, I agree -- the best horror movies use setting, mood and psychology to creep you out, not over the top blood and guts.

Well there certainly issome gaming fodder from the pilot episode and probably more are the series goes on … Although I don't have high hopes for the longevity of the series … And as a sidebar, I refuse to watch such "slice & dice" movies like SAW and Hostel, etc. … just don't see the entertainment value. And if you do … you need to seek professional help.
