So I just now got around to getting the 2nd edition of the MA rules, having for a while had the 1st edition and the Ancients version. I'm wondering if folks are porting the modified group combat rules (use the FVs for all front rank stands in a group instead of picking a single lead stand) into MA:A? It would make sense to me. Thanks, Doug |

Also – I was thinking of a tweak for group combat. Instead of a massacre bringing 1d6 unit losses (which seems a bit TOO random to me), has anyone experimented with using simple multiples? i.e. if A outscores B but less than twice then B loses one stand, if by twice but less than three times then B loses two, etc. This would still allow for outlier events, but tone down the dice a bit. Thoughts? Thanks, Doug |

Only speaking for myself, for MA:A, I am using the rules as put forward by the forum – pick a lead fighter and all adjacent front rank units fight with front value, and all rear support fight with support value. While this may seem the same as 2nd Ed MA, it is not quite as if units do not line up in a melee (some stands are not adjacent to a stand in contact), then not all front bases will get to be involved in the combat, hence having to pick a lead fighter. Well, that is how I play it. I know a clarification from Mike is that all stands of a unit participate in combat, even if not adjacent to a stand in contact with the enemy unit. But I like my way :-) And I quite like the Massacre rules – it happens rarely in our games that one unit is doubled by the other; unless they are 1 or 2 stands in size, then a massacre is not going top do too much worse than losing anyway. |

@elsyrsyn- Right now in our Roman game we are using the 2nd Edition rules. The main reason is that we are playing a 12 army campaign and we need faster unit creation for support units entering the battle
As far as the Massacre rules, we rarely have a Massacre on teh bigger units unless we are getting over run or have already taken huge loses
