They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget

Who's going to a dawn service tomorrow and where?
I'm going to the service at Torquay

I'm going to one in Alice Springs; my daughter and her school band are playing at the service in Villers Bretonneux.

Great stuff Korsun, she will remember that forever.

I found the Villers Bretonneux grave-site in 2001 after having walked through the Canadian section of the Somme just up the road.

I was completely unprepared as to how much it would move me (which always sounds like a cliche, I know).

As every year , at the Werribee Memorial at crack of dawn.

@Plutarch 64 – Yes, her school and two others from Australia will be there. So far her band has played at the Menin Gate, Arc D'Triomphe, Madeleine Cathedral and a couple of others and also been to Fromelles.

The thing is she had some understanding of the significance but this has really brought it home to all of them I think. She has a great-great uncle buried near Abbeville, killed on the Somme in 1916. To have seen the memorials, experienced and participated in the various ceremonies will be a priceless and moving memory. All those young people will bring that back and pass it on.

To me the most moving photo on the school blog was a young girl in the band who played the last post over the grave of a great-great uncle.

Particular poignancy for many this year and next with the draw down in Afghanistan…

Yet another page in the annals of the Australian Soldier – a tale of a difficult job in tough terrain, performed skillfully, valiantly and cheerfully, but at a terrible price for some who made the ultimate sacrifice for their mates, and many who have come home physically or mentally injured.

The family and I attended the Eden 5:30 am dawn service, magnificent facing a bay as the sun came up, even a real bugler, a great turnout for a small town.

Not marching this year first time in 13 years in the Goulburn City march, not leading Goulburn Pipes and Drums in the Parade, and not at Taralga service, left my medals at home too, so it feels a little unusual.

Lest we forget

Steve W – try the ABC website. Apparently they're streaming the marches etc & have lifted the regional blocking for the day…

Yawn… just got back from Balgal Beach service where I went with my father, wearing Pop's medals. Local flying club did the fly-past.

Did the Alice springs dawn service, big crowd, standing on Anzac Hill watching sun come up over the McDonnell ranges.

Paul Y25 Apr 2013 3:14 a.m. PST

Dawn service and gunfire breakfast at Belmont RSL. Bigger crowd than last year, good to see.

Ewan Hoosami25 Apr 2013 3:34 a.m. PST

Brlmont, Victoria?

Parfitts Tele25 Apr 2013 4:15 a.m. PST

Boronia RSL, Victoria for the dawn service. My daughter went to Kings park for the dawn service there, biggest crowd she has ever seen there.

Paul Y25 Apr 2013 6:45 a.m. PST

Belmont, Western Australia.
PT – no wonder, media reports @50 000 at Kings Park this morning.

trailape25 Apr 2013 10:07 p.m. PST

I addressed a crowd at the Montmorency RSL yesterday. Huge crowd. Not what I was expecting.

Theword25 Apr 2013 11:06 p.m. PST

I went to dawn service in Jerrabomberra… not too bad. Had a beer for the lads and lasses that made the ultimate sacrifice at the pub afterwards.

andygamer26 Apr 2013 1:14 p.m. PST

I was at a bank in Toronto this morning and the girl next to me was getting some Aussie dollars. To her surprise I asked her if she had done anything special for ANZAC Day yesterday but unfortunately she had not although she used to back home. Unfortunately, I forgot to tell her that there's a cenotaph ceremony held in Toronto too that she could have gone to. I'll try to remember the next time and I hope you all had a thoughtful day.

That wouldn't have been during the 70s, would it? I grew up in Redcliffe – went to St Maria Goretti's Primary School and played cricket at Belmay.

Parfitts Tele30 Apr 2013 5:00 a.m. PST

Ah yes it was, played footy for redcliffe, cricket for Belmay and little aths at the belmont centre. Belmay primary from 74-79 then belmont high.
