Honestly. I have a tonne of research material, self printed books, rare .pdf manuscripts and a whole regular library worth of HC and PB books on the subject and now that it's over, I'm wondering: Can I say adios to all of this material? I'm going to keep a few treasured tomes; but what about the rest? Can I sell a few things, donate/give away others and not feel guilty about it? What say youse guise (and female type persons of the opposite sex and/or gender) ? |

Donate it to a local library, then they can destroy it or sell it off at a jumble sale. You get to feel virtuous and all the guilt goes to them. Specially if you ask for some of the books on loan after a year or so. |

"Can I say adios to all of this material?" Of course not. A practical reason: it is (almost) certain that after your book has been published you will feel the need to check again what you wrote on page 172 first alinea. An emotional reason: can you really do away with all that which lead to this gigantic project ? And do not follow bsrlee's advice: of course also after a year you would still definitely feel the guilt

Hell, I'd say "Give it to me!," but with well over 1000 MilHist volumes filling shelves in every room, plus all manner of other oddball titles, there's just no space! And Porthos is also dead right--don't pitch anything until you've had a chance to see the first edition, at least. After that, I'd auction/sell them off on E-Bay and get some of your hard earned cash back. But if you insist on donating them, find not your local library, but give Dennis McKinney first pick, and then his recommedations for a University or other Library that specializes in Asia/Sub-Continent studies. This advice plus far too much money will buy you a girly-man coffee at Starbucks. TVAG |

When I cleaned out the shelves I donated the books to the university library – they have a large and active History Department and I figure they could use them |

Keep them, otherwise you'll regret it. Or, donate it to a University or other institution as a complete set, not to be separated. It is a big part of your life, and should be kept, somewhere, in it's entirety. |

I'd go with TVAG. Keep it for a year after the 1st issuse comes out. |

Gentlemen all
.well except for that guy over there in the corner
Yeah, YOU! Thanks for the input, I will eventually have to sell some of the books, because, as TVAG rightly pointed out, I do need to recoup some of the funds I put into this project. But there will be leftovers and since my friend George Pearson is a librarian at FIU, I will donate the remainders there
and get a nice "Tax Free Donation" slip in return. BUT
as you say, I'll wait a year (not that I was going to sell them off tomorrow either). Thanks for your input
very much appreciated! |

Spelling: youse guys. Dat's right. I'm not terribly sure that the boys in Brooklyn and the Bronx could read the difference 75 years ago. |
