They won't help you as guides, but noted Canadian artist Charlie Pachter has released a series of paintings marking the War of 1812.

Having reenacted and warn the full uniform in 35+ degree Celsius wether, they really aren't that bad. If you keep yourself hydrated, and keep York canteen filled, you don't generally get dehydrated. The uniforms also tend to insulate you a bit.

And the uniforms were not itchy. The wool coats is usually lined with something less abrasive, and even if it's not, you are wearing 2 more layers less abrasive material underneath.

I can't speak to the britishunits, but in my unit (21st us infantry, treats company, lights) we take pride in the fact that our right knee is always stained from how much kneeling we do in our role. Other US units are similar, although we have our units who only want to look pretty, they seem to be outnumbered by the number of British units who thinkthe same way.

Kudos to Pachter for his commemoration of the War of 1812. However, his style is not 'my cup of tea' and I agree with UpperCanada, his paintings should certainly not be used as a uniform guide.

That's because the British are gentlemen, CO. And a gentleman never soils his trews.
