Could you suggest me some English language books about War of Austrian Succession ?
I'm interested in battle oriented books.

Christopher Duffy's recently-reissued biography of Maximilian von Browne The Wild Goose and the Eagle covers the Italian campaign in alot of detail including interesting campaigning information.

Also Duffy's The Army of Frederick the Great and his The Army of Maria Theresa cover Austro-Prussian battles of the WAS Silesian Wars as well as giving unit histories and army organization background information for you.

Charles Grant did a nice little book about Fontenoy (William Luscombe, 1975) and his son has also produced a volume with Phil Olley about Dettingen, Fontenoy and Lauffeld (Ken Trotman, 2010).

Both of these look at the battles from a wargaming perspective.

"Fontenoy: France dominating Europe" by Denis Gandilhon.
Histoire & Collections, men and Battles series, 2008.
OBs, colour uniform plates etc etc
Should still be available.

Thanks.
Is Grant&Olley work so good ? Does it contain description of battles or mere AARs of games ?

I had this recommendation by "de Ligne" a few years back:

"The only book I have is 'The War of the Austrian Succession' by Reed Browning which I certainly recommend though its not quite up to the level of detail for battles that Duffy gives us for the SYW.
But it is very good for an overview."

I initially borrowed a copy from the library, but later acquired my own copy.

A History of the British Army by the Hon. J. W. Fortescue
volume 2 covers the WAS, available on Google Books.
reasonable detail from the British side (you didn't say which part of the WAS you were interested in)

Davenport served in the horse grenadiers at Dettingen, his letters are quite interesting, availability?

There are some very good detailed histories but in German and French

+1 Reed Browning The War of the Austrian Succession

This title is around 15 years old and is an excellent resource for what is a politically complicated conflict. Reed does a very good job of untangling and giving an insight to the diplomatic manouverings that prolonged the war past it's due by date. wink

Information is more diffuse for WAS than for SYW. Duffy's works are always worth the effort. In addition to the books on the Prussian and Austrian armies I would also recommend his military biography of Frederick the Great. Reed Browning's book is good although not specifically orientated to 'battle' history.

Francis Skrine's: Fontenoy and Great Britain's share in the war of the Austrian succession, 1741-1748; (1906)is available online here:

Now a century old and very Anglo-centric but it was based on reasonable research at the time.
