I think so, in the same way as "Airplane" is.
It has no pretensions to greatness, it is simply perfectly made. There are no false notes at all, and it is hugely entertaining.
Oddly, it is also very believable too, if you are into that kind of story.
I put a large stock in limiting "suspension of disbelief" in scifi and fantasy. Your make-believe has to be believable.
Once you accept the premise, nothing is odd. grin

I love the way the geeks back on Earth provide the necessary assistance.
I love the in-fighting in the cast that we all know REALLY went on in the original. cough cough

I also think Gwen deMarco is hot as a pistol. grin

Never give up. Never surrender!

By Grapthar's Hammer, I agree with you. I just watched this the other day. It is funny as hell.

Whatisitgood4atwork19 Apr 2013 6:48 p.m. PST

I think it's great. So many things to like about it. IMO, in many ways it is more true to the spirit of Star Trek than some offerings from the official franchise. It has better acting too – the cast is terrific.

StarCruiser19 Apr 2013 6:54 p.m. PST

Just plain ol'-fashioned fun can make a good film great.

Galaxy Quest is full of fun, so it's a great film!

Pictors Studio19 Apr 2013 7:08 p.m. PST

I'll have to watch that. I've never seen it. But if it compares to Airplane then it must be good.

FredNoris19 Apr 2013 7:09 p.m. PST

Yes.

Strangely enough I JUST finished reading Red Shirts before seeing this thread. The main story in that is required reading for Trekkies (don't give me that "Trekker" crude either ya geeky nerds)

Any movie that features someone doing a Shatner impersonation while on the toilet is defined as 'great'.

Comedy so often gets overlooked in the category of "Great Films," and this is indeed a great one. One excellent aspect is that while making fun of the original source, it does so while respecting that source and the people who love it. It also tells a great story, with heart as well as humor, and can be appreciated even if you don't know much at all about Star Trek (though, if you do, the humor is even better).
And I concur that this film is perfectly made— perfectly cast, perfectly written, perfectly shot, perfectly edited— all in the sense that everything combines to tell the story and create the laughs (and in context laughs, too, not just cheap jokes).
Oh, and do watch some of the deleted or changed scenes, especially Alan Rickman's character seeking the motivation of a rock. Hilarious, if you've ever done any theater.
Darn it, I need to buy a copy of this movie.

Mako1119 Apr 2013 8:02 p.m. PST

Uh………, no.

ming3119 Apr 2013 8:06 p.m. PST

Great flick When Rickman finally realizes what his line really means to some people is one of my favorite parts . A great film that needs no sequel

I loved Galaxy Quest.
I don't think it's a 'great film' but I think it's a very good parody.

Pedrobear19 Apr 2013 9:19 p.m. PST

A classic, yes, but maybe not yet a great.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER19 Apr 2013 9:47 p.m. PST

I fell asleep in the theater, and have never rented it.

Rassilon19 Apr 2013 9:58 p.m. PST

Yep.

Space Monkey19 Apr 2013 9:58 p.m. PST

The first time I saw it was at a blind free preview screening… we didn't know the name till we got into the theater and had heard nothing about it. From the title I was expecting some craptacular scifi knockoff. Such a surprise!

Martin Rapier19 Apr 2013 11:44 p.m. PST

Yes, a fabulous film. Imho better than Airplane.

The rolling really does help.

One of my favorite parts, but lots of great parts to choose from. Need to watch this again soon.

oldgamer20 Apr 2013 5:55 a.m. PST

Yes and no. It may not retain its strength over time like Gone with the Wind Or Citizen Kane have, these both don't rely on any context other than the general human experience. It's dependence on a very fun Classic will mean that those who view it in 30 years will have some trouble understanding the dynamic that we all have ingrained in us.

When we hit the jackpot at FOB Gaji and got a copy of all three, the younger guys didn't really get GQ, but they all got the point of the other two.

The Gray Ghost20 Apr 2013 6:08 a.m. PST

if you are into science fiction films it's a very good one, better than Spaceballs imho, and probably the best sci fi comedy. But if you are not into them then no.

Klebert L Hall20 Apr 2013 6:13 a.m. PST

Sure.
It's certainly better than most other films.

Dervel Fezian20 Apr 2013 6:35 a.m. PST

A really great film…

Coelacanth20 Apr 2013 6:42 a.m. PST

It's not Great the way "Seven Samurai" was great, but is a top-notch action sci-fi comedy with a genuine affection for its source material. It is also a useful yardstick for other movies; when I saw the J.J. Abrams "Star Trek", I rated it by how many times it reminded me of "Galaxy Quest" (fewer being better).

Not a great film but a fun film.

Roderick Robertson Fezian20 Apr 2013 9:18 a.m. PST

I class it as a Great "Flick" rather than s "Film" or, heaven help us, "Cinema".

A Flick is what we go to for entertainment – eat some popcorn, drink some soda, have a few laughs (or cries, or shrieks of terror…).

Warmaster Horus20 Apr 2013 9:25 a.m. PST

"I'm just a glorified extra" great fun

Raptoruk36920 Apr 2013 10:10 a.m. PST

A fantastic film with plenty of content to allow you to enjoy it many times, the mark of a great film.

GoGators20 Apr 2013 10:47 a.m. PST

No! Great is not a good enough word for the awesomeness that is Galaxy Quest. Better than great!

CeruLucifus20 Apr 2013 12:29 p.m. PST

Yes it is a great film, obviously. On the list of great films, is it in the top 100 or only top 200 or only top 500 or only top 1000? It depends what goes before it.

I am reminded of a time in the 90s someone argued with me that no Western could be great, so therefore "Unforgiven" wasn't a great film.*

Some of you are making a similar argument, that no parody film is allowed to be great.

* – I am twisting the discussion a little. In actuality the person's statement was that "Unforgiven" was great, so therefore it couldn't be a Western, since heretofore she only knew of bad Westerns. She was my friend's girlfriend at the time, they are both screenwriters, nowadays unfortunately she is his ex-wife.

skinkmasterreturns20 Apr 2013 12:34 p.m. PST

oooh,That's not right…

Wolfprophet20 Apr 2013 2:00 p.m. PST

I need to see it again. I've caught pieces of it on TV and I originally went and saw it in theaters.

Space Monkey20 Apr 2013 6:04 p.m. PST

I think Groundhog Day is closer to the mark.

It's a good parody like Young Frankenstein.
