A liittle helps, please Gents. What would comprise a small, non CV-based, surface action group of the US Navy in the mid to late 1980s?

A Spruance destroyer and a couple of Perry class frigates?

A missile cruiser – Belknap, California or Virigina class, with a pair of Spruance plus a pair of Perry or Knox.

Thanks guys. I will probably use either a Virginia class or the Long Beach with the escorts taskforce58 suggests. The Soviet group will consist of a Slava, Sovremennyy, Udaloy and a Krivak II. Does that sound reasonable?

throw in a Kidd for the USA. Very cool ships.

For the Soviets in early to mid 80s you can also use a Kresta-I or even an older Kynda class CG. Lots of Kashin class destroyers should still be around in that time frame, as the newer Udaloys and Sovremennyys were still being built. Not sure if Krivaks would be used for a SAG, as they are mostly ASW ships.

Of course, if you want to really up-size your Soviet SAG, put in a Kirov!

As I recall the USN had a few battleships in service during the late 1980s. One of those would certainly make an interesting center piece for a non CV-based surface action group.

A SAG built around an Iowa-class battleship would have impressive ASuW firepower, but I suspect there's a question as to whether the US Navy would allow a high-profile asset to operate without friendly air cover.

Edit to add: Thanks to dragon6 for the contribution. Any of those groups would make a good game.

On Unitas XXI, our surface group consisted of:
DDG-41 USS King, a Coontz
DE-1094 USS Pharris, a Knox
DD-968 USS Radford, a Spruance

Admitably not a lot firepower here.

The only time I operated with a Perry, she broke down and we had to tow her back to port.
