Can I use a Cavalry guidon for the HQ fro a divsional commnader? I figure seeing as usually some cavalry was sued as escort it would be ok to do this?

No. You may not. Because I said so.

C'mon, use some imagination. What do you know about the different Union generals, their backgrounds and personalities? What flag can you come up with for Hooker's Division, f'rinstance?

If they didn't use a specific designating flag, they probably used a standard garrison flag. A garrison flag is basically a longer US national flag. Since the regimental national flags were 6 feet by 6 feet, a garrison flag would essentially look like a modern day US flag. Just make sure it has the right number of stars. You wouldn't be wrong with a garrison flag.

Hooker's Division: Black flag with white, long eared rabbit head.

Custer's Division: Blue flag with white crossed arrows.

Butler's Division: Blue flag with silver crossed spoons.

If you are simply wanting to differenciate the Division commmander from the brigade generals, just put more men on the stand. But putting a company based cavalry flag to represent the division is not the way to go.
