What livery and flags would these guys have had? Their normal Burgundian gear? Or would they adopt the livery of their new employer? I'd be grateful for any advice or references. Thanks! |

I believe that as they were mercenaries they would perhaps be unlikely to be in the livery of their Duke. |

That's what I thought, which is a shame because yes it does look nice. I suppose I'm really asking about politics. Did some Burgundian noble send them with his blessing, or were they just mercenaries fighting for the highest bidder and plundering their way around England? |

I read an article in Soldier and Strategy that said the mercenaries were outfitted in Burgundian Livery, simply so they would be identified in battle. |

Some mercanaries were the gift of interested parties such as teh Duke of Burgundy or the King of France but they wouldn't necessarily wear the livery of that party. I read (can't remember where) of a contingent raised by Burgundy for Edward IV that wor ethe Dauphins livery (some kind of in joke?) but I would imagine that they would wear the livery of either their captain or (more likely) their employer. |
