Has anyone started producing these yet (i.e. 3D printed) as an alternative to the Figurehead models? |

Arun has done some in Shapeways, but due to the low resolution of the FUD material, they don't look as good as Figurehead romoved from bases: Thai Fleet: link link French colonial fleet: link Italian Spica TB: link British war emergency DDs: link MH |

Mark Thanks for that. Very interesting. At this scale I would probably compromise rather than debase. Can/will 3D printing improve? Richard |

3D printing will certainly improve. It will probably take 3-5 years for resolution on items this small to progress to the smaller, cheaper printers such that gamers will get items like these. Curious why you want unbased DDs? Frankly at 1:6000 they are hard to see even based – I'd be worried about losing them! |

Ha! I don't. I want to put all the ships on my own 25mm x 50mm bases with big ID labels so I know what they are! |

Why not make cut outs on your larger sized bases and insert the figurehead models? That should be not that difficult. |

Hm. Good idea. I'm planning to do the bases with transfers, but I could do the DD ones in two halves. |

BTW, when considering non-Figurehead manufacturers, note that the Figurehead 1/6000 line actually averages out to a bit smaller than 1/6000. It varies from model to model, but for my examples from the original molds in the 1990s, I calculated an average of 1/6300. This may be due to mold shrinkage, which has a significant effect in very small scales. Curious why you want unbased DDs? Frankly at 1:6000 they are hard to see even based – I'd be worried about losing them Because some of us got started playing with 1/1200 models on the floor, and we are creatures of habit. The other reason is that, if you have a light-colored-ocean-painted table, good lighting, and careful players, you can get away with it, and it looks much prettier when they're unbased.

Those moulded on bases are a right pain. I know someone grinds them off, at some risk to his fingers. I too prefer my own bases. |

I don't mind the molded bases meself. When finishing the Shapeways 1/6000 ships I've been making bases for them so they'll fit in visually with the Figurehead ships. |

Toshach I thought the Anglo-Italian actions in the Med looked the most interesting. |
