I'm asking for the early medieval (dark ages) period. Is the cap made out of leather, wool, both, something else? I've tended to paint them browns and tans, but that is getting boring. Are other colors appropriate? Thanks!

I tend to paint them brown or gray like un-dyed wool. At least that is what I think they are supposed to be.

It's earlier than Dark Age, but Tollund Man's cap was leather (sheepskin with the fleece inside), so hide-brown is certainly correct (http://www.tollundman.dk/liget.asp).
