I'm looking for WW I era and prior torpedo data. I use Navweaps.com a lot for gun and torpedo data, but unfortunately it doesn't have much data available for the "lesser" navies (France, Italy, Austria-Hungary, etc
). Does anyone know of more data sites out there? Thanks in advance. Kevin |

Not easy to come by accurate/reliable data for torpeodoes before about 1904, at least I have found that the sources seem to vary quite a deal on performance figures. Most seem to come from manufacturer data that doesn't always agree with data from tests under real conditions, where this is available. If anyone does know of a source for test results prior to 1905 I'd love to know about it. I'm sure there will be more available that I haven't found yet. Can't help you after that date as I lose interest once they launch Dreadnought. |

Norman Friedman's book Naval Weapons of WW1 contains a good section on torpedo development. He breaks each section down (gun, torpedo, mines) by nation as well and does include the minor nations. Concerning torpedoes many of the nations used the same type having either a license from the few developers available or pre-war ordering directly from the manufacturers. What kind of info are you looking for? I can look in my copy and let you know if what you are looking for is addressed. ---Glen |

Thanks for the replies. Glen, with respect to the data I'm looking for, hopefully the following: 1) Range in yards. The ranges at various speeds would be helpful, but ultimately just the longest range will work. 2) Warhead weight. 3) Year in service. This one definitely isn't necessary, but would be helpful. Thanks again. Kevin |

The standard, best, French WW1 torpedo is the 45cm M12D Developed in 1912, in service 1914 and throughout the war. navweaps.com/Weapons R_PreWWII.htm"link well that's interesting TMP is censoring a piece of a url navweaps.com/Weapons/W*T*F*R_PreWWII.htm I think I see the three letter acronym is the problem remove the * and that link should work but I believe the lower url might have more info hmm searching for the Italian torpedo I came upon thislink |

Kevin The Friedman book has about 42 pages of history and charts for all the nations. It is pretty much the same info as the link shown by Dragon6. So no sense me copying it out for you as its the same as that last link dragon6 shows. |

The Friedman book is actually Campbell's WWI companion volume to his WWII book. Campbell was working on his WWI book when he passed away. Friedman stepped in and essentially pulled Campbell's research together into final form. As for the WWI torpedoes, Navweaps is probably as good a source as any (much of the information is drawn from Campbell's earlier articles and research and later appears in the Friedman/Campbells book). |
