I am currently painting a Division general and wish ot place a flag bearer with him. What did a divisonal commander use as a flag?

Most divisions in the Union army had flags unique to their division and corps.

I don't know if it matters to you or not but the flags were not introduced until 1863.

And then only in the Army of the Potomac, which was not the entire Union Army.

Actually, McClellan had a system of regimental, brigade and division flags in place in mid-1862 for the Army of the Potomac. Rosecrans had a brigade, division, and corps HQ flag system in place for the 14th Corps, later renamed the Army of the Cumberland, in late 1862. Those ones are are not listed at the website above.
