Horrible news that could have been far worse.

Prayers and thoughts to the victims and their families.

I agree with Kyote too early to be condemning the first people the authorities are questioning

Warning: One of the images below is extremely graphic, although apparently the guy survived:

Not too soon for cnn or Kristoff at the NYT apparently…

Warmaster Horus15 Apr 2013 3:07 p.m. PST

"20 y.o. Saudi National" apprehended. Could be cliche just about any way you slice it. Thoughts and prayers with the victims

defiantly don't buy into the hype of suspects, especially in the first 24 hrs. Prayers for victims.

Crikey that last image is grim.

We are in Boston; our daughter, Kate, finished race some 25 minutes prior to explosions and was waiting for us one block away from explosions. We were one block away on other side. People very calm despite situation. Two dead, 56 injured -

mjkerner15 Apr 2013 3:54 p.m. PST

Hal, glad to hear you and your family are OK. I remember when Kate and Annie(?) stamp "sticker-onners" for MWAN. The best to you all.

Space Monkey15 Apr 2013 3:54 p.m. PST

So many cameras on the scene… hard to believe that something won't show up once it's all been poked through carefully.

Rudysnelson15 Apr 2013 3:59 p.m. PST

The terrorist whether domestic or Foreign need to be executed.

My prayers are with all of my friends in the area.

Ron W DuBray15 Apr 2013 4:09 p.m. PST

as of 6:30 BPD news conference there are no repeat NO suspects.

dam040915 Apr 2013 4:24 p.m. PST

Yes. I am about 20 miles north of Boston.
Press is desperate for info and seem to be making things up.
It appears that 2 ugly bombs went off. Probably backpacks with shrapnel.
2 dead and about another 100 injured. From critical to burns, cuts and bruises.
High alert and ongoing investigation.
No group is taking responsibility that has been released.
Hal, i am so glad your family is well.
All my best.

Reportedly, they have surveillance video showing someone apparently planting backpacks.

This is awful – so senseless.

Hal – so very glad to hear that you and your family are unharmed.

Klebert L Hall15 Apr 2013 4:44 p.m. PST

We're still in the rumor phase, and BPD is saying nothing about suspects yet.

My bet is on domestic terrorism, not international. This is not a target that makes any sense for anyone but locals.

Mass General Hospital right next to our hotel (Liberty Hotel) – many police around here for several hours. TV just reported hospital parking garage closed down with bomb squads and swat teams combing it.

Police to search all 26 miles of Marathon. Just announced.

Militia Pete15 Apr 2013 5:02 p.m. PST

The police scanner had them going to the capital building, pulling Penske trucks, all sorts of stuff.

coopman15 Apr 2013 5:07 p.m. PST

It will be categorized as yet another incident of "workplace violence", no doubt.

Just heard swat team at "Brigham"(?) hospital have suspect (apparently injured) in custody.

Hal;
Brigham and Women's Hospital. My father used to work there.

Great trauma center.

Good luck Hal.

I live just outside Boston and didn't hear anything about it until a friend in Texas texted me wondering if I was ok. Crazy day.

BrotherSevej15 Apr 2013 6:11 p.m. PST

From nearly the other side of the world, my prayers for the victims.

Condottiere15 Apr 2013 6:23 p.m. PST

Just heard swat team at "Brigham"(?) hospital have suspect (apparently injured) in custody.

Apparently a false rumor. FBI and Boston PD deny this.

Hal--That's too close for comfort, brother. Glad you and yours are safe.

Reluctant Dragon15 Apr 2013 7:58 p.m. PST

Senseless – our thoughts and prayers for victims and their families.

nevinsrip15 Apr 2013 8:31 p.m. PST

Let's not forget that once a suspect is "in custody" he is entitled to an attorney. Custody is a legal term and applies once a person is no longer free to leave.

Law enforcement will NOT (repeat NOT) consider this "person of interest" in custody until he tries to walk out of the hospital. Only then will he be arrested and his right to counsel will attach.

Until then they are free to question him, obtain warrants to search his home, workplace, emails, cell phones and on and on.

I would be willing to bet that the FBI has already spoken to him and that they are activly seeking others right now.
They will not announce anything until they have the entire cell rolled up.

Treating terrorists as criminals is one of the stupidest decisions that the Justice Department has ever made. Of course, we know that it comes right from the White House. Form your own opinion on that one.

Word is that the "person" is a Saudi national, so that swings things toward Middle eastern terrorism, not domestic.

I worked with the FBI for many years and supervised Agents in the Violent Felony Task Force here in NYC. I know how they operate and I am confident that they will have this whole thing wrapped up by the weekend, as far as the actual bombers are concerned.

Finding the mastermind and the financial backers will be a longer slog.

Hal, wonderful to hear that you, Kate and Anne are fine. Stay safe, my old friend.

nsolomon9915 Apr 2013 8:38 p.m. PST

On yet another dreadful day, I wish to say to our American friends, yet again under attack from without or within, Australia stands beside you as we always have. Hearts go out to you and prayers are for the injured and families of the dead. Our wish is for justice and peace.

Dunadan15 Apr 2013 10:21 p.m. PST

Glad to hear you and yours are all fine Hal. I had a moment of "holy Deleted by Moderator" when I saw this thread: TMP link

Also, anyone think the guy in blue on the far right of the 2nd picture looks a little too chill with the situation? Could be suspicious.

tkdguy15 Apr 2013 11:22 p.m. PST
Inkpaduta16 Apr 2013 6:02 a.m. PST

Supposedly they have found two other bombs, I am just thankful this wasn't a lot worse with all those people in one spot.

Klebert L Hall16 Apr 2013 6:41 a.m. PST

Word is that the "person" is a Saudi national, so that swings things toward Middle eastern terrorism, not domestic.

Only the NY Post thinks this guy had anything to do with it.

Most reports suggest he was just a victim, tackled by bystanders while fleeing the scene injured because he "looked foreign".

Thanks to everyone who expressed concern. Such a senseless tragedy. Boston is a great city, great people, and a great police department.
