Every time I leave home for a show, with the vehicle all packed with the trade stand, hotel booked etc, I always have a moment of doub,t about 15 minutes into the trip. Is it really today? Am I going to arrive and find no-one there?

And you've actually done it. My sympathies.

Doug

At least you are at the front of the queue now :-)

Bad Painter13 Apr 2013 9:18 a.m. PST

Isn't it always on the same weekend as the London Marathon? That way many wargamers can do both Salute and the Marathon.

In their dreams…….

Alan M13 Apr 2013 10:51 a.m. PST

I did it last year. All day on a stand and then ran the next day. Great fun.

Lardie the Great13 Apr 2013 11:14 a.m. PST

Bad Painter, I've often noticed how the two groups are almost impossible to tell apart ;)

Schoie8813 Apr 2013 1:41 p.m. PST

On the tube to Excel there is a great mix of wargamers and athletes [registering for the marathon]. Not difficult to spot the difference ;-).

cheers David

Really ? Or are you just leg-pulling ??

If genuine – poor you (ROFLMAO!) grin

No, really, we all make mistakes sometimes….

I have wondered what the runners make of us, there they are calorie counted, carbohydrate balanced and most importantly physically fit and then there are us gamers, which I have to say are almost none of those things, the closest thing to exercise most gamers get to is carrying a toolbox full of figs but since the plastic trend even that is not the workout it once was.

Trajanus14 Apr 2013 3:41 a.m. PST

Its not just Salute – looking at pictures posted on TMP you can spot wargamers anywhere in the World!

Although in fairness to us, you can say the same about model railways, model airplanes, steam trains etc etc.

I went to a motor cycle show at the Excel earlier in the year and while travelling by train I still knew who was going there, even though they didn't have their biking gear on!

As with all these tribes, it takes one to know one!

I got there about 09.20 hours and couldn't believe my luck, thinking I'm either going straight in or I'm gonna see the huge queue. All I saw was a long queue of scrummy-mummies waiting to get into the Bake a Cake show! They were very kind to a distraught old wargamer. Let me eat more cake.

I won't kid you I was doing a planned recce I screwed up!

But fortnight Saturday …well hey, hey, hey

Mollinary14 Apr 2013 9:24 a.m. PST

Don't do it again! It's not "fortnight Saturday" it's next Saturday! Just six days to go.

Mollinary

PS If it was a joke, nice one.

Silent Pool14 Apr 2013 10:31 a.m. PST

wink

Thanks mollinary

Not a completely wasted trip then.

How was your Normandy trip BFBAM? Or did you turn up on the wrong day? :o)

Silent Pool15 Apr 2013 2:54 p.m. PST

RMD,

Good of you to remember. I had a team behind me so there was no chance of that happening.

The original Normandy trip had to be cancelled at the 11th hour because of heavy snow. We managed to get away within the month but the driver realised that the journey time from Calais to Normandy would give us insufficient time there so we aborted and drove to visit Ypres, Belgium, instead.

A fascinating and thought provoking experience, we visited Essex Farm, Tynecot Cemetery, Menin Gate, Langemark, Passendale and a stretch of 'original' trench at Hill 62 Sanctuary Wood. A good time, with a little food and a few cheeky little beers.

Next, Arnhem probably, with some Para chums who, apparently, will be doing the drop! All for charity.

Regards,

Blues 4

Excellent to hear that the situation was recovered! :o)

As it happens, I'm taking my father and the Memsahib to Belgium and the Netherlands next week and Ypres is the first place my father wants to visit (his grandfather – my great-grandfather – fought there). I've been to Ypres twice before (last time was last October) and I'm really looking forward to another plate of Flemish Stew! As for 'cheeky little beers', I can almost taste the 'Trappist Rochefort' (11%) now… And feel the floor coming up to meet me…

We'll also be taking in Walcheren, Waterloo, Arnhem and some other places, so it should be a good week (if we survive the 'Little Bruges Bear' pub and its 250 beers)! :o)

Did you not go to Cakes International instead?

Someone on LAF mentioned about seeing me tomorrow, last Saturday, and I did point out his misunderstanding. He was very grateful.
