Comments or corrections?

I'm working on a Confederate ambulance wagon & have noticed that some, at least, used to fly a yellow flag.

Is this correct & what is the significance?

Thanks.

Hospitals flew yellow flags. If I remember correctly, some also had a green "H" as well…

You might want to check the history on the subject. The topic was discussed on TMP only a few weeks ago.

Union flags/guidons

The hospital flag with the "H" was used in 1864 on. Prior to that a simple yellow flag was used 1862-1864. The ambulance guidon was not used until (I believe) late 1864-1865.

I believe the confederacy used red guidons and hospital flags. Their stretcher bearers wore a red armband.

Ditto what guy already posted. In general the union army had more standardization and the Yellow flags were pretty standard. There are pictures of the hospitals and flags at Gettysburg post battle that are fairly common in many references. I think the Photographic History of the Civil War has a whole chapter on images of Hospitals during the war.

Confederates early on one would be more likely to find the red hospital flags. As the war went on it was not as common.

Thanks everyone.
Rudy; sorry but I missed that earlier discussion.

Not a problem. I have to often go back and check topics that I missed while I was at a convention.

Definitely red for CS hospitals, field dressing stations, ambulances, etc up until at least late 1863. That was the norm, though on occasion you would find a plain yellow flag at hospitals outside of the battlefield area, such as converted churches, hotels, etc.

As to the "Ambulance Corps" armband, it's actually a hat band that was fasted with 1 or 2 brass safety pins behind the hat or cap. Prior to 1863, most detailed men to the Ambulance Corps were given a printed card that they wore stuck into their hatband or fastened to their cap. This was a temporary badge given to them when they reported for the detail, and turned in by them when they were sent back to their respective units.

here's an image of the "Ambulance Corps" hat band :
