"A painstakingly produced and very complete personal manuscript signal book, evidently intended for practical shipboard use. The system described is derived from Lord Howe's 1799 Signals and Instructions, which was several times revised – in 1803 because of the capture of a signal book by the French – and was reprinted in 1808. In the printed versions, the flags to be employed and signalling systems were to be completed by hand, so that the codes could be changed to prevent their decryption by the enemy. The signal numbers and "significations" – the explanatory text giving the meaning of each signal – correspond with the system used by Collingwood in his orders to the Mediterranean Fleet in 1808. (See Corbett, Fighting Instructions pp. 269 & 323–30.) In the alphabetical list of Ships of the Navy, a number of vessels have been added at a later stage, all of them entering the Navy at dates between 1808 and 1814, suggesting that the book was in continuous – careful – use for at least six years. This is a remarkably complete example, offering encryption (an alphabetical list by subject) and decryption (numerical list) of around 500 numeric signals from Naval and private ships; together with sections on specific signals on headlands and rendezvous; the points of the compass; single flag signals…"

Good to see that is reasonably priced.

Hope to see them included in the next Age of Sail rules release, for $19.95 USD, including the naval combat details, and sailing rules too.
