Please can anyone help with info as to Chinese uniforms during the Sino Jap war as I am interested in recreating this in 28mm having been inspired by the recent articles in Miniature Wargaming.

Based upon what I have read and seen in period illustrations, the Chinese Imperial forces were dressed very similar to the earlier Manchu. Trousers, a tunic (often appears blue, but other colors used) with a white disc on back and chest identifying the unit and either a turban or black cap. In 15mm, Falcon and Old Glory have figures that would work. See below links:

I'm looking at this and the Sino French war -I've got Foundry Chinese and Old Glory Boxers at the moment. I think the Chinese troops from this era will work. I've have the Ian Heath book and there were still reasonable numbers of spears etc in units. I even found a reference to a charge on French troops by war elephants so they're in for a start.

!!! Yikes! (Check Khurasan, he's been working on some Indian/Asiatic elephants)
