I will start this tomorrow but before I get started I thought I might add part of my non modeling stage; see how my mangled brain works or misfires. :) First thought
which monster to make? I don't have any plans so let us go with a thought first and then match the parts to fit. Second thought
reason
to show my process and hopefully inspire others to build their own
so in that vein I will try to stick with easy to find and less expensive to support supplies. I have lots of parts and pieces that most would not have, so as much as I would like to use them, for this project I will do my best to resist. So
cheap, fast, and easy.
I have a dollar store a few miles away; I'll ask my wife to make a run for me (as I am all strep and flu ridden), grab a random dino and something else interesting. So the project theme
how about a Biollante type giant monster? The chimera of Godzilla, human, and rose(?) DNA. So how about a hybrid of dino and plant? I will assume this will be a decent first project starter
the next could be a request for sure :) Without seeing the dino in question, I can assume and hope
most likely there will a choice of a t-rex'ish and bronto'ish types
I will hope for a decent t-rex or ankylosaur
but I will work with whatever comes my way.
The material to bind the parts and pieces together. As most of these projects are dealing with various grades and values of PVC or other soft plastics/vinyls you will find that it is pretty much a pain in the ass to work with. Molding putty does not like to stick to it
paint can and will roll/peel off just from looking at it hard
and in general is fairly uncooperative. Green/grey/white stuff works great but there is a cost involved and we are looking at cheap and easy. Hopefully all you interested types are familiar with bondo or related other brand name body filler products? Yes they do have a cost but much cheaper by volume than modeling putty
$8 for a small can at Mart-Wal
The trick for working with this sort of product in this sort of project is to be ready to use it
make all your cuts, fit all your parts, have items pinned/filled if desired
before you mix it. Work outdoors or in well vented area. It sands well but it also smooths well
the more you shape and smooth before it cures the less you have to sand and finish later. Wear latex or nitrile gloves, tight fitting
great for clean up and function. So the plan is to task my wife with the task of finding me a cheap dino of the 4" range and perhaps a weird plastic plant to work with
we can hope for a Venus flytrap lol. Without seeing what I will have to work with, I will make a flytrap head if she can not find one
inspired! So a basic dino body, flytrap head, and
who knows
I tend to play it by ear and eye as the project builds steam
something will come to me
maybe whip arms? Any thoughts before I start or during the process please let them fly :) |

If I can not find a plastic flytrap head then I will check out the cheap sea shell bins for a pair of interesting bivalves

Well I wanted to start this today
being sick beyond my control decided that I should sleep the day away
we will try again in the morning lol. At least no more 103* fevers. |

Hey, rest up man! You can spend the time conceptualizing the monster. . . |
28mmMan | 11 Apr 2013 9:16 a.m. PST |
I have been giving the plant Dino some thought, while waiting at dr office, how about the alien plant cast off a piece off space rock, trapped from any organic contact until a deep core project touched it, it wakes up with genetic memory of the creature it hosted before, so in theory this thing could end up looking more like a cow, dog, or human with time, So a giant Venus fly trap from space trapped on earth
absorbs DNA
becomes
. I don't have a name, the project is about the building process. Pics to follow on the first stages. :) |

I look forward to the birth of Bondo. Regenerate soon. |
28mmMan | 11 Apr 2013 7:40 p.m. PST |
Bon'do $1 USD dino from the $1 USD store
So what is next? |
28mmMan | 11 Apr 2013 7:51 p.m. PST |
I normally just break out the knife and start cutting
this dino is fairly soft and hollow
so an xacto blade will cut like butter. Mark your cut lines because stuff happens. In this case I want to retain some height and bulk as well as a thought to the final look. First off the arms are gone
choppy chop chop. Then the head
where to cut
|
28mmMan | 11 Apr 2013 8:48 p.m. PST |
Made several cuts from mouth tip to the mid neck line and then peeled them back like banana skins, shoved a marble into the neck hole. From here I will let it set overnight and relax, then tomorrow I will build up a thin layer of bondo along the inner mouth. I will be using plastic fork tines for the flytrap teeth. And there is step 2 :) The back will be covered with spore pods like these
And there will be many smaller mouths along along the lower body :)

So at this point I am thinking no eyes. Eyes or no eyes? |
Spudeus | 12 Apr 2013 6:39 a.m. PST |
I would vote no eyes. Eyes would look silly on a venus flytrap! Plenty of 'teeth', tho! |
GiantMonster | 12 Apr 2013 7:09 a.m. PST |
That is going to be one awesome looking monster! -Ken Radioactive Press |
28mmMan | 12 Apr 2013 8:02 a.m. PST |
No eyes it is! And I hope he looks awesome in the end
the current ugly stage can be disheartening lol. :) |
28mmMan | 12 Apr 2013 7:31 p.m. PST |
I had a thought for the little mouths. I can sculpt them easy and I have lots of bug parts, but I am trying to keep it basic and accessible for those with modeling skill issues lol. I have been looking for little coffee stirrers with the tiny spoon at the end
cut those off and make little maws. :) |
28mmMan | 12 Apr 2013 7:32 p.m. PST |
If I can not find them cheap, then it will be a simple sculpt. By the way
I forgot to mention that I washed my dino when it was new, this takes off the finishing wax and pest sealer this is often left behind. |
28mmMan | 13 Apr 2013 8:42 p.m. PST |
I was unsuccessful in finding a supply of the little spoons, so a simple sculpt it will be. I mentioned Bondo
not a decent product for much of anything regarding our hobby other than bulk projects, bonding and filling difficult surfaces, and as a sand-able adhesive. So the sculpting aspect. For those interested, do you want me to use green/white stuff or something less high end and easy to find like Fimo air drying poly clay? |
28mmMan | 15 Apr 2013 7:46 p.m. PST |
Ok I was on my feet today, so another step
Though it does not look like much, a fair amount is going on here
reinforcing the weak tendrils/face parts, establishing the "meat" of the mouth, and gives a feeling for the pose
There is a potentially weak point directly behind the neck, so I will add a dab of bondo on the next pass.
What is next? Teeth
lots of teeth. I am staggering with each tendril/fluke getting five teeth, with stubs deep inside all the way to 3/4" at the end. :) |
28mmMan | 15 Apr 2013 7:48 p.m. PST |
I left it messy on purpose
I could have easily smoothed it but I liked the raw torn texture
it will lend to "wet mouth" painting later :) |
28mmMan | 15 Apr 2013 7:57 p.m. PST |
The teeth pattern will follow something like this
|
Thieses | 19 Apr 2013 9:05 a.m. PST |
28mm, I just saw this thread. This is very cool project. Keep up the good work. I have done a "fly trap" as a piece of scenery in the past. For the "mouths", I used bottle caps which I folded closed added shortened tooth picks as the "teeth" |
28mmMan | 19 Apr 2013 9:10 a.m. PST |
I have been fighting the flu
I am hoping to finish the construction tonight and paint up this weekend :) |
28mmMan | 19 Apr 2013 7:54 p.m. PST |
I could keep adding more details but it is time to move on. The next one, I will just knock it out and take pics as I go
|
MisterFox | 07 May 2013 7:30 p.m. PST |
Wow, that's just gloriously hideous. This walking dinosaur thing who's whole front side erupts into mouths and tentacles. I know what I'll be having nightmares about tonight! Do you have any pics of it all completed and painted? |
28mmMan | 07 May 2013 8:57 p.m. PST |
I had moved on to other builds
just finished another, will post tomorrow. I had not given much thought to the paint on this guy, I will consider it
maybe shop some color on it and see how it looks? |
28mmMan | 07 May 2013 9:15 p.m. PST |
Something like this perhaps?
:) |
MisterFox | 08 May 2013 5:04 a.m. PST |
LOL, now it looks like he's spawning mistletoe! :) |
28mmMan | 08 May 2013 7:38 a.m. PST |
Well he is an alien plant-dino hybrid :D |

Thieses | 23 May 2013 3:59 a.m. PST |
Great use of purple. THe plant looks very cool. This creature would give Biollante a run for its money. First it has legs. :) |

This one looks good…!
