I will soon traveling to the Jacksonville area, and would like to make a couple of B&M stops while there. I am looking to find minis and rules and whatnot, but not of the ol' GW/Privateer/FoW variety. Does anyone have any suggestions? ~Mike |

I have not looked around much lately, even though I live in Jacksonville, as I'm not spending much on gaming these days and what I do spend tends to be online. I understand Hammer Hall is still open, but I've never been there. I believe Borderlands may also be there still, but I've not been in years. I used to occasionally drop in to War Dogs, but I think they're closed (they're certainly not in the same location anyway). I hear there's a good bit more to look at in Orlando, and that's only a two-three hour drive (depending on how heavy your foot is). Doug |

A few years back (2010), I stopped off at Borderland's on my way back up to Brunswick, GA. They had a decent historical rules section (Repent, LaSalle I remember off the top of my head). I picked up a 15mm Staghound from Battlefront. |

A bit more than a year ago, I was in Orlando with loads of time to kill (and free gas!), and probably hit every game & comic shop within twenty miles. But I'm afraid I can't do Orlando this time, and with a 1-year-old in tow, I can no longer go on my beloved, epic game-store hunts of old. That's why I'm fishing for input so I can make a couple of stops count
or, at least be enjoyable for browsing. Online shopping is terribly convenient, but it's just never as fun as finding something cool on a peg right in front of you. And when it comes to hunting minis, I'm a bit of an opportunistic feeder In searches, Borderlands has a big presence, and good feedback. I haven't turned up War Dogs. Pity, it's a good name for a shop. |

I haven't turned up War Dogs. Pity, it's a good name for a shop. It was a pretty decent shop. I was sad to see it empty when last I drove by there. Doug |

Really, Wardogs empty? They were at the Siege of Augusta show in Augusta GA in January. They were on the list (the last time I checked) to attend Recon in Orlando FL next weekend. The will be vendors at the Rapier show in Jacksonville during June. |

Rudy, I believe you are referring to Dogs of War. Shop in Palm Bay FL. Prob 3 hours south of Jax. I don't have any insight into places around Jax. Just wish there was one in Alachua county. |

Sounds correct with me flipping the name. |

I'm with you, GoGators. You get a comic shop with a GW wall as your choice. Down in Ocala, we get nothing

OK, here's an excerpt from "There & Back Again, a Jacksonville Business Holiday". I was able to fit a good deal of "adventuring" in, despite Friday turning out to be a complete wash. Borderlands Comics & Games on Atlantic Blvd. had the most to interest me. Along with the requisite GW & Privateer (and some FoW), they had a decent stock of Battletech, Osprey, Reaper, & even Brushfire. They also had a decent selection of rules, even some of the more "utilitarian" varieties you just don't see on shelves anymore. The staff was friendly & helpful- we had a discussion of whether I should pick up Black Powder or Saga. I went there first, and spent way too much money (and was talked into Saga!), but for my needs it had the most to offer anyway, so there wasn't much danger of me being beaten with a rolling pin for going on a city-wide spending spree. The Jacksonville Game Center on Beach Blvd. had just opened up in the old location of the gone-but-not-forgotten War Dogs. I assume they aren't the same guys? They have a decent selection of board games, and lots of CCG stuff. The only thing that would qualify as minis were some of the Wave 2 X-Wing "big guys". Though their store area is pretty small, they have a large gaming area. They had a good grand-opening sale on their board games. Phoenix Games of Jacksonville is on the backside of a small strip mall. You aren't going to just stumble across it, I barely found it and I was looking. I (again!) assume its affiliated with the much larger Phoenix in Orlando, but I may be mistaken. They have lots of board games, some GW & PP, and a small amount of Infinity minis (one of which I finally broke down and bought). It seemed mostly just a gaming community with some stock- an increasingly common form of B&M these days. Hammer Hall Games on Plymouth St (not King St, as most search engines turned up) is also a game center with a store on the side, but their website pretty much indicated as such. A few minis and games, I picked up a FFG's A-Wing. They have an "in memoriam" plaque dedicated to War Dogs on the wall, which I thought was pretty cool. FLGS is on Roosevelt Blvd on the edge of the Jax NAB. GW, PP, micro-armor, and an unusually large amount of Tannhauser goods! Plus lots of, er, classic games- it's been some time since I have seen TORG supplements! Anyway, they have a large gaming area, and as it was Saturday at noon, it was bustling with activity, and men with no-nonsense haircuts . There ware a couple of others I searched, but didn't make it too for time restraints, or they were too far off the path. |
