What colour were the wings for KGL and guards flank companies? I believe they had white piping, but was the "fill" blue like the facings or red like it would be for the line regiments. Also the Drummer – I have had painted a drummer in reversed colours but now i read that he should just heavily laced with blue facings. Going to use them as apinted as most people probably wont notice however if i get chance to get some more painted I'd like to get it right |

Mont St Jean is a truly remarkable resource. Quite extraordinary to run something like this, open access, in this commercial age. My only criticism, where are the primary sources? Where is the evidence base? All that is missing is references
..that is a big "all". Over the years, this site has proved invaluable to me, for quick reference, but it is not gospel. This site is quoted so often as the authority on this message board (not at all unreasonably, I freely admit) My impression is that, on this occasion, it is 100% right.
.and yet, it is like saying that in Sharpe, episode 3, the Chasseur was wearing a blue codpiece, ergo all chasseurs etc

Quick question
wasn't the original inquiry regarding the uniform during the peninsula and not the 100 days.. I'm curious also regarding the wings "fill" color.. Is the understanding that beyond the shako and the pants other characteristics of the uniform did not change? cheers Francisco |

1) Quite a few line infantry regiments had dark blueish-green facings (24th, 45th, 49th and 55th spring instantly to mind), so a bit of green over the blue and you can give them a "free transfer" and replace them with new figures. 2) My understanding is that the Guards had blue wing infills and the KGL red, during the Peninsula campaigns. Whether this altered with the 1812 uniform regulations, I can't say, but the "Mont St Jean" website has them the same as before for the Waterloo uniforms. link |

I have seen existing KGL jackets in a museum in Hanover. They definitely have red wings. There is however a small blue diamond on the centre of the wing, with a bugle horn badge (for light) and presumably a similar one with a grenade for grenadiers. This tiny blue diamond is presumably why Knotel made a mistake and showed them with blue wings. Incidentally the KGL did not have flank companies until 25 December1811. Prior to that they had 8 identical centre companies per battalion, but found skirmishers by detaching 12 men per company into a skirmish screen (a Hanoverian system also used by their newly raised regular and Landwehr battalions in 1813-15). These sharpshooters were rifle armed and when the KGL formed flank companies they formed their light companies from these sharpshooters, so the light companies of KGL Line battalions were rifle armed.
