He wants to go to the Eastern Front,WW2 at 1/300th scale. Vehicles, Men, aircraft, decals and paint are sorted. Which leaves the following:- * flight stands. Who, in the UK sells good flight stands individually or in small packs? (Not much call for flight stands in 15mm Napoleonland, so outside my knowledge base. Also my Google-fu is weak today and getting me nowhere) * rules. He is a bright little cookie, but still a 9 year old. He says he wants rules that aren't too easy, but not too hard. So, 1/300th compatible WW2 rules, not too diffcult, but not too basic. Needs to have rules for ground attack aircraft. Oh and mustn't be too expensive as he is funding the whole thing not Bank of Dad.(Do you have "Lasalle/Black Powder/G deB rules are the best thing ever, everything else is just pants" type discussions here too? I assume you do) Thank you in anticipation |

Well, this would be the first place I'd look. freewargamesrules.co.uk Lots of free rules to be had on just about any subject imaginable. Also you could try hunting down a copy of Crossfire. That is a pretty approachable rules set and should work well with small scale units. If he wants to do Flames of War, you can usually get the Mini Rule Book for pretty cheap on E-bay. auction I will warn you that it is 288 pages. Mostly rules and scenarios. The game, from what I understand is not that difficult. That is a lot of rules to parse. You will need stats for your game. Yes. They could not fit the stats into the book for some reason. Das Book would do the trick. auction You can get it a little cheaper on Amazon. link |

What about some of Featherstone's rules? While not really meant for 1/300, they are usually pretty straightforward and available again. |

Pz8 WW2 rules, I used to play with my boy when he was 9 yrs old, with 1/300 microarmour. 2 pages long, includes tanks, infantry, vehicles, artillery, minefields and all that, and ground attack rules too (even if very abstract). Oh and you will find very simple aerial rules too, in the pdf panzer8.weebly.com for flight stands, em-4 miniatures (clear, black or white) link |

I play Warpath in 6mm to good effect. Track damage to each unit with small dice. Ground Attack rules are unofficial but very straightforward: Planes are always reserves, "move" to anywhere and shoot, next "move" is back to reserve, can repeat. Email me for my simple WWII list: my username at yahoo.com. |

Agree the Pz8 Rules are good for both kids and beginners |

Go with a very small amount of units for the first time. Too many, and it becomes a chore. |

Blitzkreig Commander gives a good game and is relatively straightforward – you can explain the mechanics and have someone playing within about 10 minutes, then all you need to play is the data for each unit. It works very well in 1/300 scale IMO. Cost is £12.00 GBP for pdf or £17.50 GBP for hard copy, but this includes all vehicle and unit data for the whole war, so nothing else is required to play. |

Thank you for the suggestions. And also the flight stands too. Surprised he isn't slleping by the front door waiting for his parcel of shiny stuff to arrive |

Have a look for Bruce Quarrie's 'Tank Battles in Miniature, the Russian Front' A bit more complex but a complete quide including history, unit structures, basic rules etc |

One of the variants on Fubar might cover the majority of requirements. Or Charles Grant's "Battle" (if you can find a copy) would give a good starting point for smaller actions. You would have to create some simple ground attack rules but shouldn't be too hard. |

Try the Shellshock system (shellshock.com) The rules are simple enough and priced right (free). He aims his rules at kids, too. The Modern units are cheap -- fold your own from provided paper templates and glue. A bit of varnish renders them waterproof. I don't know about any WW2 models he would have developed. Glen Domingo and his crew are amazing. I see them at Little Wars and they always have something innovative. Last year they were playing a shellshock variant on a playing field of *real* turf, complete with bugs, and a running water stream wandering through it. Among this years games is a battle where your army pieces involve bits of marshmallow and pretzels. You could literally eat the opponent! |
