Well, after some advice from people on these very forums, I've got my asteroids all done up!

So come on by and take a peek!

Those look great, and the bases are ingenious. Looks like I need to run by Home Depot!

Looks great.

I always like when the asteroids are like that, but I can foresee some of my club members complaining on not being able to judge accurately that if your ship hits the asteroid's 'base' or not.

How do you over come that problem?

Very nice. With the asteroid movement, I can see playing a game of … well … "Asteroids" … on the tabletop, using X-wing. Just have to figure out the angles they bounce off of each other when they collide, and how they split when shot.

Very nice ones!

Very nice! I had made a set similar to these for Firestorm Armada, but they have not seen the table for X-Wing yet. Personally, I much prefer the look of 3D terrain. The issue for us is that in X-Wing, we end up hitting and overlapping the flat asteroids that come with the game all the time, and there are rules for how that works.

How do you plan to handle collisions and line of sight with these especially as the bases are much smaller than the standard ones that come with the game? Have you tried them and seen any difference in how things play?

I would think that if the ship base is contacting the asteroids base at the end of that ships movement, you would resolve the situation as per the rules. I like this idea. A friend has lots of rocks we have found that make nice objects in space. I think I will mount them on clear plastic bases to match the other bases in the game. I have found a very nice asteroid material, the popular lava rock used in landscaping. I "liberated" a few from a parking lot curbed bed. Many had spilled out onto the parking lot and were just a hazard anyway. I returned most of them to their proper place, and a few followed me home.

Interesting point. I can see a simple solution— trace the printed asteroids' shapes onto black card or clear plastic, trim, and glue these to the bottoms of the lava rocks' bases. This creates the "overlap" guide for game play without detracting from the look.

"not being able to judge accurately that if your ship hits the asteroid's 'base' or not"

I have similar looking asteroids, and just stand them up on top of the cardboard asteroid counters that come with the game. The plastic ships, and the rock and base (which are notoriously top-heavy) are for show, but the real mechanics lie on when the square base comes into contact with the cardboard counter.

Good idea Parzival.
That is what I was asking in a round about way…

Idea flash: I happen to have a golf-tee on my desk from where I emptied my pockets after a round— and it occurs to me it's nearly the perfect height to be the post of a base. I have a whole bag of these things I got on clearance for a couple of bucks. So that's the stems covered; now I need to drum up some scrap items to make the bases.

Those look great!

Thanks for sharing your pics.

Steel washers would probably work well for the bases, but I like the idea of the carved templates to match the shape of the asteroids, so perhaps a bit of styrene cut to shape for that, on top.

Another solution I've seen somewhere else was to put the 3D asteroids on top of the actual asteroid tokens that come with the game. If a ship gets close, just remove the 3D asteroid until they get past it.

Yeah, no real worries… First, the bases are not small, so almost every ship base can hit almost every asteroid base from every direction with very few exceptions. Second, we just play for fun, so if it is really close and we can't tell we'll just roll a die. No biggie, as long as you are just playing for fun!
