I recently acquired a small fleet of 1/450 ships from Peter Pig (part of the Pieces of Eight range), and I'm finding it hard to locate useful reference material for painting them. Does anyone have a link to any useful material that would give me some guidance on colour schemes? Or perhaps a good book (my default setting would be to buy the Osprey book on Pirate ships, but something broader would be good)? Thanks! |

Ospreys on pirate ships and spanish galleons are good references. Also, if you have a Barnes & Noble or other bookstore, there are often coffee table books about Pirates for cheap in the discount section, many lots of nice pictures. Also try a google search of "pirate ship", lots of cartoons but also some paintings and models for inspiration. |

Good advice, thanks. I'm glad I wasn't missing anything specific! |

Yea, Google Peter Pig Pirate Ships, and you'll see some decent examples. They tend to use plain brown for the hulls, with a splash of color here and there, and a tan/beige for their sails. This is accurate for the earlier days, when they were made of linen, if I recall correctly. Later, they were more white, and light gray. |
