I confess to being an impulsive collector of certain wargames related items. My two weaknesses are paint and reference books.

I saw the Coat d'Arms add this morning and thought "I should buy a lot of colors from that company, I don't yet have any." Despite the fact that I have several hundred(!) paints from Vallejo, Tamiya, Howard Hues, and several brands of craft acrylics.

Then there are the reference books. Recently I saw two Ian Heath titles on eBay. One was "Armies of the Crusades" (I have no figures for this period), and the second was the "Armies of the Americas" book from Foundry(again, I do not have a single Aztec or Conquistador).

In the back of my mind I think "I'll read these, but I'm unlikely to use them for gaming, but just in case I build a Seljuk Turk army when I'm 68 I'll need this title".

At least in the case of "Armies of the Crusades", I now have every WRG title from "Armies of the Hellinistic and Punic Wars" through "Armies of Feudal Europe". This basically covers the West and Middle East from 350 BC-1300 AD.

Yep,

hello, my name is < > and I am a war gamer……

Got all sorts of " necessary" stuff myself and keep finding new "necessary" stuff to buy………

Hello, my name is Mike and I consider myself a wargamer.

Admitting you have a problem is always the first step. Of course, that will not deter you from buying something "shiny", five minutes from now.

Dale Hurtt07 Apr 2013 6:51 a.m. PST

So, what are you looking for? New, fresh justifications why the purchase of paints and reference materials is rational? grin

I once had an obsession with paper and office supplies. I have it under control now. I think a lot of wargamers call themselves 'rules junkies'. I certainly have more rules than I will ever play and I buy rules knowing that I will never play them, I just want to see if they have some new, unique game mechanic that I can use elsewhere.

I just bought seven or eight boxes of 54mm Naps because, well, because we were both in the store at the same time and I figure I could paint them up in the toy soldier style and play games with my daughter, because that's a worthwhile cause, isn't it?

Why of course, 79th! And don't forget the positive power of using that common interest to take her along shopping and mention "hope to find more items for our little project"! Be surprised how many suggestions might come from her for using various mundaine items with useful purposes! Keep gaming a family affair whenever you can with your kids. They (and you) will always remember those good times!

I don't have any problems with paint or collecting rule books or even reference books. What I can't stop doing is starting new periods or lines of figures. Just once I would like to focus on something I already have an play and develop it more.

Texas Jack07 Apr 2013 12:17 p.m. PST

Iīm with Inkpaduta, just canīt stop starting those new periods.

Iīm deep into things I thought I had no interest in, and it all requires a lot of new shiny stuff and books. Hell, this Korea business has even gotten me thinking about modern. You know, Korea, with all that old Soviet gear, leads to Cold War fun, and then if you are getting that why not delve into Arab-Israeli wars? You get the point.

But, like I tell my wife in a poor attempt to somehow justify all this, I have to buy all this stuff now while I have the money, because once I retire there ainīt no money coming in for such nonsense. So boys, spend it while you got it!

I have to buy all this stuff now while I have the money, because once I retire there ainīt no money coming in for such nonsense.

You also to have to get it now because when you're finally ready for it, it may no longer be around to buy.

I am trying to control my addiction. This month, for example, I have managed not to buy anything wargame related… well, except a couple of books… and a magazine… and a boardgame… Oh, my! I think I've relapsed and wasn't even aware that I had!

I look at it this way – a serious drug habit would cost more and be less fun.

richarDISNEY08 Apr 2013 8:21 a.m. PST

I dunno 20thmaine. My wife told me that I should take up drugs as it would be cheaper! laugh

I will admit, I buy anything that is sculpted my Werner Klocke. Even if I don't have a use for the fig.
It's my guilty pleasure.
