(1) I would like to paint 24 (evenually 30) Victrix metal figures as the 4th Cacagores in the late-war uniform – with stovepipe shako. I can't find data on the internet about whether they had light blue collar and cuffs, as in the early uniform with the Barretina. Help! (2) Would they have carried white, off white, linen colored side-satchels as for the British line, or would these have been black or gray cloth? (3) I plan to do the back-packs in semi-gloss or flat black, with gloss-black straps. (I like to do my British line when wearing the stovepipe with back packs with regimental facing-colored cover with white straps.) (4) Conventional light blue British round water barrel? (5) Any other advice in painting, as to whether they still wore white breeches under black gaiters in the summer. I have seen painted figures on the internet with gray breeches, or brown, and the same for overall. I like to mix them. Any help appreciated1 GdeP |

My Osprey on the Portuguese army has a note to a plate: "the later uniform, when all Cacadore battalions wore black facings". The plates are no help at all on other kit, as figures are portrayed with just belts, cartridge box and bayonet scabbard. I suspect the troops were largely given British packs, canteens, etc. |

Maddening! I found the following site on the internet, but not one clear picture of the backpack of the cacadores with the stovepipe. link There are painted Victrix metal cacadores, showing linen, or light brown, side satchels. Also, some grey breeches, one in light tan. Also see the light blue canteen. None appears to have light blue collar and cuff. I wonder how the 4th was designated? There appears to be some of the 6th with yellow collar and cuffs, as they had earlier also, so I may just go ahead with the light blue for both. Really drab compared to most Napoleonics! GdeP |

The Philip Haythornthwaite book shows a 4th Cacadore with stovepipe and light blue collar and cuffs. I think for kit like knapsacks and canteens, especially late war, if in doubt go for British supplied kit. The illustration is dated to 1812 and shows a tiradore all in brown with black gaiters lined at the tops with thin light blue lacing, light infantry style. I don't think cacadores wore whites, that was line and militia infantry. |

I just painted up the 6th Cacadores, so I feel your pain. Osprey seems bound and determined to never show the back of anyone, so they're no real help. I am impressed by their ability to stretch the Portuguese Army to three books, however, by only including one combat arm per volume. The genius of the free market, indeed. Anyway, looking at Portuguese re-enactor sites led me to conclude that while the Portuguese had British backpacks and canteens, they did not paint them like the British, leaving them in the natural colors. So brown leather backpacks and brown wood canteens. This allows you to use every shade of brown you own on each figure! Mark |

I noticed – in the link of all the painted figures on the internet – that the Cascadores in Barretina carried a "typical" European/French/Prussian/Austrian type cowhide (?) pack in brown material. Mserafin: For the 4th Cacadores in stovepipe, I decided to paint the backpack cover black with semi-gloss straps but the sides in a gray similar to the overcoat roll on top. I probably should "scribe" a "folded envelope" appearance into the side with side straps, but I'm getting nowhere, but getting older! Half an army to go, and already 76! I like the natural wood idea for the water flask. El Torre: The YouTube link shows a reenactor as a cacadore with white breeches, and straight leggings up to below the knee. Officer of the 11th line – red edging, light blue cuffs; and soldier of th 23rd – light blue collar and cuffs, red edging. The figure with the 4 on his shako looks like he should be an artilleryman – dark blue collar and cuffs, red edging. Was there a 4th artillery regiment? I think I will do all the breechs dark brown as for the coat, but the overalls in mid-gray or lighter. Any more information/ideas appreciated! Won't be painting again again until 2 hours on Saturday, 2 on Sunday. GdeP |
