Marcus Maximus05 Apr 2013 8:18 a.m. PST

Lovely figures Simon! Do you have the machimoi done yet?

oldbob05 Apr 2013 8:34 a.m. PST

I have you now sir,I know that I out number you with pointy sticks guys at the moment thou. Tomorrow you'll more than likely outnumber me!

Simon; for this battle are you going to using your own rules or a commerical set?

Gripping Beast makes some very nice Ptolemaic pikeman for this period, which you already know!

On a different subject, please recommend books on the Roman army. I have all the Ospery books, plus Goldsworth,Keppie,Webster, Barker, Robinson, plus the new one on the histories of the Legions.

Big Red05 Apr 2013 8:55 a.m. PST

The Bat has done it again! Wonderful work. What books do you recommend on the Successors?

Roderick Robertson Fezian05 Apr 2013 9:41 a.m. PST

That fellow on the far left is going to get a reaming-out from his file closer for letting his pike stray out of vertical!

oldbob05 Apr 2013 9:47 a.m. PST

Roberick Robertson; I've been telling the Bat about that guy, he does need more training!

Hi chaps, thanks.

Marcus, yes I have painted half of the Machimoi, need to photograph them… Will post next week.

oldbob, planning to use my own rules. I've run quite a few playtests and have another big one coming up week after next. I still need to test a big pike clash though. I have around 500 of the Polemarch phalangites (there are a dozen in the above), and Jim was kind enough to send me some generals, which I'll use for the game.

Roman army; I think you have more than me! My personal favourite is the SOA publication on the Year of the Four Emperors; that is a great wargaming source book. They sell it on disk.

BigRed, I'm not terribly well read on the Successors, more a Roman than a Macedonian. For inspirational reading, I love the Alfred Duggan novel "Elephants and Castles" and Mary Renault's "Funeral Games". I'm using Stephane Thion's Soldat Lagide for painting inspiration on this project. The old Montverts are very pretty, and the new Osprey Macedonian Armies After Alexander is useful.

Cheers, Simon

Hi Roderick, yes the left hand peltast is on a charge!

Cheers, Simon

oldbob05 Apr 2013 10:31 a.m. PST

Simon; 500, boy you know how to burn a guy's tail feathers! I only have a 160 pikemen. I will look in the "SOA" shop for that book.

Big Red; their plenty of books about the Successors that specialize for different Successors. To start if you don't already have it, Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars by Duncan Head is a great primer for this period. Rollin's Ancient History volumes number 4 and 5 has it all. these book you need to go the Library and special order them, still a very good read. Mr. Heads book can be bought on ebay from time to time.

Seconded on AEMPW, that is invaluable. Ancient Warfare Magazine also has lots of useful articles on the Successors.

Big Red05 Apr 2013 1:38 p.m. PST

Thanks for the tips.

LEGION 195005 Apr 2013 3:40 p.m. PST

Simon, only 500? You are catching up to me! Oldbob only 180 , your far behind in the pike race! I have 320 Alexander also 320 of the sucessor from Aventine and Polmarch ranges. Oldbob I think you have all the books that I would get on the Romans! Mike Adams P.S. the Alexander pike are Foundry. Simon has pictures on his blog if he wants to show them again! Thanks Simon if you do!

Mithridates05 Apr 2013 6:16 p.m. PST

Nicely done Simon. We will need to compare notes on Raphia after Mike (Satrap Miniatures) and I get our get act together and finish nellies and command groups. I see he has done his bit for the Seleucid Arabs!

Legion 1950; 640 Pikemen, that's one more reason no more Cedars in Lebenon!

"Stephane Thion's Soldat Lagide for painting inspiration on this project. The old Montverts are very pretty, and the new Osprey Macedonian Armies After Alexander is useful."

It's nice to see folks promiting the Successors… nothing helps more than seeing an inspiring phalanx, which yours is indeed!

Stephane Thion's Soldat Lagide, really is just a color guide mostly showing the Sekunda Montvert art-- but since the Montverts are rare it is welcome… I wish I had the patience to translate it… I'm sure it is an interesting text… I got mine cheap on Amazon so it is worth the price of an Osprey for the color line art, even if they are repetitive, for those who do not have the Montverts.

Thanks chaps. I have 288 late successor pike painted, so far, against a 528 target. I'd like to later expand my 96 Alexandrian to a full Alexandrian army, and have an Antigonid army, too. My dream battles would be Gabiene and Paraitacene…

Garry your and Satrap's last battle was very impressive, I look forward to seeign Raphia,

Alas I only have one of the Montverts, the Ptolemaic, and was lucky to get that second hand at a fair price. What I like about Stephane's book is that he tries to collate all the available information about that army and shows its development. I particularly like the page with the collated tunic colours. It's very wargamer/modeller friendly (aside from the French!).

Lord Raglan07 Apr 2013 8:40 a.m. PST

Simply awesome Simon, I will have to try to make this wargame show just to see this site in the flesh.

Raglan

Personal logo BigRedBat Sponsoring Member of TMP07 Apr 2013 10:52 a.m. PST

Partizan is very friendly Raglan, and there should be plenty of space in the game, if you want to play… over 4m of battle line…

Cheers, Simon

Marcus Maximus07 Apr 2013 12:48 p.m. PST

Fantastic army Simon, 4m line too, wow, simply stunning!

Marcus Brutus07 Apr 2013 1:41 p.m. PST

Now this is wargaming. No skirmishing here! Men after my own heart. 500 pike or 640. But how do you play with them all? I have 6 units of 40 pike and that makes for a big game with all the add ons.

Personal logo BigRedBat Sponsoring Member of TMP07 Apr 2013 2:29 p.m. PST

Hi Marcus, I've written a set of rules which should enable us to play relatively quickly, using a grid, with one or two units in each box. The pike units will be big, 48 or 72, which will help.

Cheers, Simon
