Hi,

How well does Dixon miniatures mix with the average plastic figure size wise? By average, I am talking ESCI or about 24mm tall. There 8th army range looks pretty good and I am looking for some support weapons.

Thanks,

John

Like David and Goliath.
Just compare the heads.

Yeah, no way will they work together.

Thanks. I've had a look at Raventhorpe. In a comparison photo the figure looked OK with ESCI. The head is a little bigger as is the body but they are both the same height. Any experience with Raventhorpe?

Soft Platic figures like Esci are really closer to 20 mm and you may have some luck there. Most soft plastics are HO scale, NOT 25 mm and certainly not 28 mm.
You can get away with vehicles and such, but not figures.

There are lots of metal 20 mm ranges (which are usually 22 mm and perfect for you).

I dont collect WW 2, so I can't help you with a maker. But I have Esci ACW and they match perfectly with RSM 20 mm ACW line and the Stone Mt 22 mm line.

I'm not sure people have actually answered the question you asked – those comments seem to be referring to their usual 25/28mm ranges, not their 20mm WW2, which are an altogether different proposition, and mix very well with plastics – a lot better than Raventhorpe do, imo.

That said, for a mainly plastic force, my first port of call's usually SHQ to round it out – their slender sculpting style is more in line with the norm of plastic sets than most metal ranges, so well worth a look for any gaps that Dixon can't fill.

[Edit:] Having thought about it, one of my earliest wargames units was in fact a plastic and Dixons mix – I had a Rapid Fire 8th army battalion made up from the Revell set with 3" mortar and a couple of other bits from Dixon, which went together very well indeed.

Raventhorpe tend to be tall in comparison to plastics…..but varying the basing can help…….

My Dixon Russians and 8th Army match well with the usual plastics. Recent Italeri are the exception due to their ever-increasing height – and of course, Valiant monster men.

Thanks Dom. I would have been happy with SHQ, but they don't seem to have any Desert forces. It's all Western Europe stuff. I originally chose Dixon because their 20mm stuff seemed to be somewhat slender for metals. So I figured they would be a close match though at 20mm, they might be a bit short. I plan on doing what you are doing with adding a Dixon Mortar and Vickers MG.

Gaz0045, I saw a comparison photo of Raventhorpe vs Esci and others. The Raventhorpe figure is perhaps 26mm tall and the ESCI/Revell/Italeri officer is right at 25mm. Is that an exception to the rule or is the extra girth causing the figure to look huge compared to the plastic?

Useful comparison

Raventhorpe is #1 on the left in the top photo. ESCI is #2 on the right in the second photo down.

Good point – I'd forgotten they don't do an 8th Army line in shorts, only their Mediterranean infantry (short sleeves, trousers.)

I like the Dixon figures- nice style. SHQ do this range- I don't know what they look like but I'd be surprised if they weren't in shorts!

They do have shorts! link

My Raventhorpe troops always stood out in the crowd and I moved them on in the end…….personal taste in the end!

Britannia always appear chunky but are OK in units of their own……SHQ,Blitz,Early War Miniatures,FAA all mix well and I tend to use them for specialist types and bulk out formations with plastics…….like my Soviet battalion of Airfix,Pegasus,Esci,Italeri,Zvezda -about a 'company' of each!

Raventhorpe are more the size of 25mm Minifigs! They go well with Reviresco 28mm.
