I am looking at starting a new project centered around the Livonian War (1558-1583) and the Muscovite Army of Ivan IV (the Terrible). I've been browsing around for suitable figures and such, but I can't (in my limited experience) think of a set of rules that may be appropriate. I own Pike & Shotte and have read through the rules (but have not played a game yet) but it doesn't seem that it would capture this early time period and the flavor of this war (Cossacks, limited artillery, Teutonic knights, firearms, no big pike blocks,etc.). Can anybody make a recommendation for a ruleset that may work that I could look into? thanks, Jonathan |

I wonder how well the upcoming By Fire and Sword rules could be adapted. They are designed for the 17th century. link From the Free Wargames rules site link I have downloaded Winged Fury which seems a pretty simple game. |

I don't understand your reasons for deciding pike and shotte is not suitable. The rules don't require or only cater for big pike blocks. Cossacks are just light cavalry, "knights" would be same as cuirassiers, artillery is artillery. It would capture the flavour fine. Jaz TMP link |

I'm afraid By Fire and Sword would require many modifications before one can use it for second part of 16th century. Different tactics, different units and army compositions, specific terrain of campaign
And BTW – Cossacks were not 'just light cavalry', during this period they were in fact awful horsemen ;) |

Thanks for the responses thus far. I'll take a look at all of these. @6sided: I really didn't "decide" that Pike & Shotte was unsuitable – like I said I have only read through the rules without playing a game and so made some assumptions that may be incorrect and I can certainly look closer as that. |

If F&S is not suitable could try DBR or Maximillian |

FoG Renaissance is very well though of. You may not want this level of detail though. I detest DBR. Don't know why but it is the one DBX game I don't like at all. I think watching some folks play and the same thing happening over and over again made it seem weird and dull. I hope it was just this game and not the system in general? |
