I only started reading his books last year and found them captivating. A rare combination of creative genius and superb writing and characterisation.

I have started on his non-sf works and found them equally good. He will be missed for all sorts of reasons. I hope that he can make the best of what time remains to him.

I'm just finishing his latest Culture novel, The Hydrogen Sonata, and really enjoying it. I'm going to miss having new ones to read. Always been a fan right from the Wasp Factory. Met him at an SF convention years ago. Amusing and friendly bloke.
