I noticed in the 1506 print of the Battle of Fornovo 1495 TMP link that a stradiot on the far left has a drum.

This reminded me of a Mameluke in The Pilgrimage of Arnold von Harff, 1496 to 1499, with a drum. Ian Heath wrote that this indicates an officer.

Are there other instances of this being used by Ottomans or in the west?

Druzhina,
Can't help you on the drum issue, but I thought I'd let you know that the links you've been posting are frequently interesting. Thanks!

Interesting but, probably a drum. It looks like a drum I admit. Did other cavalry of the time carry saddle drums? I don't know if they did or not.

Hmmm, not of import, but iteresting.
