Does anyone have thoughts about what colors to use to paint a large number of red coated infantry for Napoleonics? I'm not sure I like Army Painters use of blue, what about grey or red? |

I use Vallejo paints with Strong tone painted on like a wash. Gives pretty nice results. I undercoat everything white and try to paint the red jacket quite cleanly when doing the first layer, as painting white over red is really annoying and takes numerous layers before the red doesn't show through. The colors I use are Vallejo Model color: Offwhite, white highlight on select parts after army painter has dried Flat Red Neutral Grey Flat Brown Medium Fleshtone followed by Basic Skintone You can see a few examples in my blog: engineered-gaming.blogspot.fi/2013/03/wip-92nd-gordon-highlanders.html |

I agree with Nysseh, start with white. and very carefully paint the red leaving the belts and tuffs exposed. You can leave the pants white or paint them a light grey. I like AP dark tone over the strong tone, the brown makes it muddy in my opinion. I do apply teh AP with a brush and within a minute start removing it with a dry brush. John |

I have done this with AWI British. Spray white undercoat. Block on main colours, keeping them LIGHT. So for example, the red I used was actually Vallejo aramantha. Also water them down slightly, so the white undercoat creates a very slight highlight. Paint around the white straps etc, this is far easier than trying to paint over red. Then I use army painter strong tone, brushed on quite conservatively. No need to scrape it off or anything, just enough to run into the crevices to form the shadows. Then once the AP has dried, I touch up the white on the straps, just with a line or two to add definition. Cheers Jaz 6sided.net |
