By period and genre, what are the most popular rules/games for competition play at the moment?

Flames of War for World War 2 (The Hobby)…

Flames of War followed by the lose grouping of Ancients, but right on their heals is X-Wing.

Excluding pre-painted figure games:

I would guess that Warhammer 40K is more popular than FoW still. Followed by WHFB.

After that I'd still guess that Warmachine edges out FoW.

Then maybe Flames of War followed at some distance by anything else.

What I see is FOW and DBA. I know 40K is in there somewhere but it really not something I pay attention to.

Probably FOG for 15mm Ancient & Medieval ….although it probably varies depending on location.

I had the impression, perhaps incorrectly, that Impetus was gaining ground world-wide.

The rage for "Eat Hitler – the Tournament Version" is surely on its way to global domination.

I should have mentioned in the OP that I am quite interested in the figure size/scale that the competitions are for, too (so thanks to those that read my mind and included it anyway!).

Whirlwind02 Apr 2013 11:15 a.m. PST

So far then:

Ancients-Medievals: DBA/FoG (in 15mm)/Impetus
WW2: FoW (15mm)
SF: WH40K
SF Space Combat: X-Wing

Any competition games in other periods and genres (or scales)?

Warmachine tourneys look pretty popular.

WFB and WH40K we can fill seats for at our annual show. Other systems get played a lot locally but seem to have the demand for competition. Maybe next year…

Active tournament scenes:
40k and WHFB
FoW
Warmachine / Hordes
DBM but I think FoG has replaced it for 15mm ancients

You also have
DBA in 15mm
Oh and Saga and Bolt Action seem to be newcomers

Is there any competition 'scene' for renaissance, horse-and-musket, ACW, Colonial etc.?

Marshal Mark03 Apr 2013 3:54 p.m. PST

There is FOG-R for Renaissance.

UK historical non-branded events …

Ancients: FoG; DBMM; Armati; DBA; Impetus in that order, as far as I see …
Renaissance: FoG-R … that's all I see.
WW2: FoW (biggest by far); PBI … that's all I see
Modern: AK47 (reloaded) … that's all I see …

Peter Pig runs branded events catering for most of the RFCM rules (incl AK and PBI) and when WH Historical existed there were WAB events at HQ (I went to one) so I assume there are successor events but the WAB GT is the only one I have had info about … And Saga days exist which I would imagine are notionally competitive in their structure.

Scale for historical wargaming (events) is almost exclusively 15mm with some 25mm FoG ancients. WAB and Saga are bound to be 28mm, I'd have thought.

That's what I see moving around quite a bit …

HOTT has a fair few tournaments in the UK. It is niche market but with at leaast 5 events in the year and not all the same people attending each there's an agrument to suggest it's popular still.

Despite the fact that I may be going to an X wing tournament soon, I don't see it as a tournament set. There's only two sides; Rebel and Imperial and to have two Rebel squadrons or two Imperial squadrons shooting at each other just seems silly.

Yes I know it's all fiction anyway and it's arguably no more silly than my Wars Of the Roses Yorkists taking on Spartans in an ancients tournament but hopefully you see what I mean.

In terms of tournaments I see Impetus slowly growing, Saga becoming more and more popular, FoG in decline but still strong with FoW also not as popular as it once was. X Wing seems to be the game growing most at the moment and rightly so IMO.
