A few snaps of my smallest Age of Sail fleet in action. link link A first attempt of 'Fire as She Bears' v2.1, being Strachan's Action off Cape Ortegal. I reduced the original 3" octogons to 4.5cm A/F in clear acrylic and adjusted the ranges by 2/3rds. The tumbling dice ships are based on 1" washers. Cheers! Wilf |

They don't look too bad for such a small scale. |

these are really nice. Are they available, I only see 1/2400 |
SteelonSand | 02 Apr 2013 1:33 p.m. PST |
Those look absolutely great – I had really struggled with basing my own ones effectively – seems like you've done an additional scenic sea base and then placed them on those excellent octagonal clear acrylic ones? Would love to hear about the method
@ Duc de Limbourg: the 1/4800th can be found right at the bottom of the 1/2400th drop down menu/list on the Tumbling Dice site. |

Hi Steel, I checked out your blog while researching these little blighters! :-) I have the Trafalgar pack with just the three deckers still to paint. I superglued the ships onto 1" stainless steel washers I bought from an eBay retailer. I used milliput to blend the step between the ship's moulded base and washer ( storage trays have magnetic tape to secure them). The wave texture is fine art acrylic heavy carvable modelling paste ( used to give 3D texture to paintings) carefully applied with an old brush. Base colour, wash & highlight, etc. The clear acrylic octogons are laser cut from Warbases UK by request & are used for the movement mechanic in the rules, but aren't fixed to the ships. More on the rules here: link Looking forward to some fleet scale action on a reasonable table size! Cheers, Wilf |

Thanks Wilf, I wondered how you had got such a fine texture on the basing – the original integral bases being so small – it has really come out effectively, and I guess by using differently flagged octagons, each ship can appear under different national colours – very clever! I'll have to have another look at my own ones – cheers for the link to the ruleset, too. |

Hi Steel, Actually the ship ID labels are also separate :-) I made them up using a graphics program, printed them onto self-adhesive packaging label, stuck onto thin card, then cut out and stuck to the underside of the steel washer using double sided tape. Temporary fixing so they can be re-labelled as required by the scenario. Cheers! Wilf |

Really impressive work with them, looking foward to some battel reports :) I'm very tempted by this scale for big battles may i ask how you paint them, are there any techniques that work really well for this scale? Or is it the same as 1:2400? |
Wilf12358 | 03 Apr 2013 5:24 a.m. PST |
Hi Ben, I'm still on a learning curve myself, but generally I'm applying the same principles as per 1:2400 (which is also the next size up AoS ships I have, from Tumbling Dice incidentally). For the single & two deckers I decided on generic all black or black with one or two yellow stripes. Usual prep & white spray undercoat first. Light brown to cover the deck, masts, etc., then work outwards. Sails bleached bone, stays mid/dark grey, black yards & tops/nests. Highlight the sails in white, leaving the bleached bone as shading. For the hulls, either all black, or (for stripes) paint yellow first then line the black on top. (Truly the route to madness: one reason I've left the three deckers until last
.). Tried washing the stern windows but to no avail: black with yellow surround. Finished with a hard gloss varnish followed by matt to dull the shine. With hindsight, I'd have contoured the bases with milliput before painting rather than after, as the finger print residue can get everywhere if you're not careful (lots of retouching). Cheers! Wilf |

Thanks Wilf, that's really helpful. I can see how the stripes on the hull are a bit of a pain, I think the Nelson chequer would be the path to true madness
.. and lots of swearing. Think I might pick a few of these up at Salute to try painting, see how I like it. |

Hi Chaps, I've finally finished my Trafalgar set from Tumbling Dice and thought they may be of interest?
link The ships of the line are on 1" washers, with the cutters, brigs and sloops on UK pennies. I'm using 'Fire as she Bears' rules for fleet scale gaming, using acrylic octagons as movement tiles. Cheers! Wilf |

Hi Wilf, Love the ships. Been thinking about doing smaller scale ships. Seeing yours makes the idea seem more likely. Thanks Be safe Rory |
Nightmoss | 22 Dec 2013 10:28 p.m. PST |
Wilf, the ships are gorgeous. I cannot conceive of working on ships that small, but you've done an amazing job. Rory, you're not allowed to change scale. Don't you have Swedish and Russian fleets to finish still? ;) |
devsdoc | 23 Dec 2013 4:50 p.m. PST |
I have started the Swedes,Jim. The Russian high sea fleet is done. Anchorage has lost all my photos and this dummy can not work out how to get them on this site. Sorry but after the first bit (photos as numbers) I get lost. I do love the smaller scales as I love fleet actions. I would and could not give up my 1-1200 ships and must add to them. I have 9 Swedes to do and must buy around 3 more for my 12 to 13 ship fleets. In the last 3 years I have done around 40-ish ships at 1-1200 scale. and am planning the 2 inshore Russian and Swedish fleets. Brass sails are putting me off a little on this one. Don't you start on me too. Vol has a dig at me all the time about smaller scales. Just look at Wilf's photos and tell me they are not cool. I could not do 20 plus ships a side in 1-1200 store or have room to play. So I will look and dream of the day I order my frist 1-2400 or 1-4800 scale ships. Jim do not hate me as I have not left the 1-1200 scale. Just looking (for now) Be safe Rory |

Wilf's work is impressive and if you like fleet actions it must be perfect for that! I've done 8 1/1200 ships since May so I envy you your 40ish ships. Finding the space to store them is becoming an issue, so I do understand why you'd be looking at 1/2400 or 1/4800. Yes, all our pictures are gone and I don't know if Keith is going to be able to restore them. 2 years of files and photos gone unless folks can re-upload them?! |
Wilf12358 | 24 Dec 2013 3:34 a.m. PST |
Thanks for the compliments chaps! I'm very happy with the results, although the perfectionist in me wants to tidy up a few details, stern windows, a few wiggly stripes. Then the reality check kicks in! At this scale they are all generic and can be used as you please. This scale is great for fleet actions on a reasonable sized table. I have larger scale ships for squadron actions, but draw the line at Langton perfection: wargame pieces after all! Merry Xmas! Wilf |
devsdoc | 24 Dec 2013 11:30 a.m. PST |
Wilf, Thank you for your thread I love it. Was looking at the Tumbing Dice web site. I must think which scale? Hmmmmm! Jim, I'm lucky I have all my photos and Vol made my guild into a book like form. So for me all is not lost. I would re-post photos if I thought it would help anyone. But as the K.S. has started to arrive I do not think many would be interested at Anchorage. Be safe Both Rory |
Nightmoss | 25 Dec 2013 8:38 a.m. PST |
Rory, your photos and guide to rigging will be a huge help to anyone who visits the SoG Anchorage. If/When Keith opens up the ability to post photos again I sure hope you do put as many of yours back online as you can? |
