Need help with typical rank progression from trainee to squadron command for pilots and observers/ gunners for German, French, and British air services in WWI. Austrian, Italian, Russian, American or other nations would also be welcome. I'm gearing up for some ww1 rules that have some role-playing character to them, and it would be nice not to blunder completely with the fictitious names.

Thanks

I'm not sure what all the various ranks are and their progression from one to another but it was certainly possible for a two-seater to be commanded by the gunner/observer if he was ranked above the pilot!

If you know anyone with a copy of the old "Dawn Patrol" game it has everything you are looking for for the major combatants and much more.

In WWI, pilots could be officers or enlisted men in at least the British and German services. Only officers could advance to command, however.

I am a bit unsure about the lowest ranks used for allied pilots. The Germans had non officer pilot rankings.

Thank you, gentlemen.

As I understood it the Austrians might move an officer to command a higher formation but would not necessarily promote him in rank. Hence Godwin Brumowski remaining a Captain despite commanding all Austrian sqns at the wars end
