Just finished my Shapeways Sikorsky Ilya Muromets – big is an understatement!

I bought a 1/72 model once to use in a game.
I had NO IDEA how big it was!

Which material did you have it printed with? Did you have any trouble with the rough finish?

It looks like it is WSF … his other aircraft (like the Pups) are in WSF. Even so, it is a great looking paint job.

It is the WSF. I find a good undercoat then a couple of layers of paint are all that is needed. The Pups look rougher in the photos than they do in real life as I messed around with the photos given the poor natural light.

Some of the Shapeways is now being offered in polished WSF. I picked up 3 S-XIII's and didn't have to do anything special to paint them.

As if Osprey releasing a WWI Russian book next month wasn't temptation enough….

I think "polished" may mean the sharp edges are dulled.

It does tend to wipe out the propellers on aircraft models in particular – I prefer to live with applying a few coats of paint and varnish.

No, the whole model is polished and much smoother than the standard unpolished ones.

What is the process for prepping them.

Is it a wash in some soppy water, undercoat and then paint or is there a better way?

Planes look fantastic btw :)

No need to wash the WSF (although it's essential with the finer more expensive materials) – basically they have quite a grainy surface (as the WSF material's sintered nylon powder) so the more coats of paint and/or varnish, the smoother it gets.

Whilst I have not had the problem with any previous WSF models the Felixstowe I bought had a LOT of white dust build up under the tail fin. I didn't need to wash it but a stiff brushing was required…
