A Good-Looking Army in a Reasonable Amount of Time

Painting a wargaming army is a completely different beast from painting a single miniature for display.

This is from my blog. Silly I know, but I had fun.

An incomptlete manuscript written by Tolkien was recently discovered in my attic. Somewhere between Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White, there was Gandalf the Groovy.

picture

Scholars have already dubbed this as Gandalf's "Psychedelic Period", a time marked by the wizard's wearing of colourful attire and his inexplicable use of the phrase "Peace man" whenever he cast a spell.

"We all know the wizard liked his pipe-weed" said Dr. Fatbottom of Oxford University in an exclusive interview. "What we have yet to discover is precisely which weed he was smoking.

Currently a panel of experts have convened at Shenanigans Pub to try to solve the "Riddle of the Weed". The dominant theory is that Gandalf may have stumbled upon a secret stash created by Tobold Hornblower for his own "personal use".

This is a 30mm sculpt from Dark Sword Miniatures. It is not Gandalf, I just wanted to have some fun with the figure.

It's not too late to enter my prize draw. Names will be drawn over the weekend and winners announced next week.

Far out man! Like, I knew he was smokin' some good stuff in that pipe of his!

Looks a lot like "Saruman of many colours"

I love the way he is casting the contents of a lava lamp!

He and Henry the Octomage could RULE THE WORLD…MWAHAHAHA

Of course Gandalf the Groovy would be the prime ruler by virtue of his superior paint job!

AnneOleary27 Mar 2013 5:41 a.m. PST

Gandalf and Octomage!! That sounds like it would make a cool B movie that would turn into an instant classic!

Where are those figures from? They're pretty cool.

That would explain why he forgot his name as Gandolf the Grey when he was Gandolf the White.

Wasn't he the lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead?

M C MonkeyDew27 Mar 2013 6:15 a.m. PST

Indeed it would!

The Octomage and goblin pirate are Reaper figures. The goblin comes in a pack with a wonderful monkey toting a barrel (a powder monkey)!

The Halfling assassins are from Alternative Armies.

One of the two blue wizards who went to the East and never returned? Perhaps to the Middle Earth equivalent of Marrakesh or Kathmandu!

Very clever – well done

High marks for the Mighty Octomage as well

Wasn't he the lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead?

That was Jerry Garcia (much missed after all these years)

zippyfusenet27 Mar 2013 7:21 a.m. PST

Looks like Tom Bombadil slipped something into Gandalf's tea. Juggyjuggyjuggy_the walls_are_melting_oooooo.

@MC I'm just now getting heavily into Reaper and I love their stuff. I just got a package in the post today with some of the Chronoscope I ordered. Cool stuff.

@20yhmaine-I miss Garcia as well. My husband is a guitar player and I'm a drummer. When John Bonham died, I was completely crushed. Cried for days and days.

Lovin' the paint work, and the posts.

Grelber27 Mar 2013 6:42 p.m. PST

Reminds me that back in olden days, I refurbished an olive drab file cabinet and painted it turquoise and pink.

Also makes me wonder about the possibilities of painting a figure in a tie-dyed outfit.

Try another one tie-dyed! grin
Lots of mushrooms in the Shire, too!

AnneOleary28 Mar 2013 6:21 a.m. PST

Tie dyed would be cool. I don't think I have the skill for that though.

It could indeed have been Farmer Maggot's mushrooms :)

"Arrrrrr… it were Farmer Eastburrow that first grew the true Psilocybin, back in 1422 that would be.. then Old Father Larchden managed to introduce the blue tip.. Not a patch on the Spotted Redcap in tea though…"

StarfuryXL528 Mar 2013 10:04 p.m. PST

I don't know, I think it's a special blend that Radagast supplies him with. That would explain why Gandalf is always popping off for a few days to meet with the Wacky Wizard.
