So I grew up in Poland, and live in Mexico. Why do I speak English, French, old English and Middle English but not Spanish or Polish?

Thanks for the link Armand.

Born in Venezuela, grew up in the Netherlands…

Damon.

So, I was born in France. I've lived in Turkey and Argentina. And I now reside in Singapore. Put that together with military service in West Germany and South Korea and I seem to have been a serious world traveler.

Great irony that Hawaii is Nigeria on that map.

So my Norwegian ancestors knew what they were doing when they moved here, to Norway?

New Jersey = Russia? Holy crap!

I was born in Pakistan, spent the first four years of my life in Brazil, then moved to the Twilight Zone (the arrows for New Zealand and Hong Kong seem to be pointing at two parts of the same state but there is no arrow pointing at our nation's capitol), then (I guess) New Zealand. Some few years later, I did my basic training in Sweden and AIT in Poland, and spent some time in a small country in Southeast Asia (which, turnabout being fair play, must be called Rhode Island). A couple of years stationed in Portugal, although I actually lived in Saudi Arabia, and then back to Rhode Island for more vacation time. Two years in Austria and the end of a budding military career were followed by twenty-three years in (I guess) New Zealand and then a move to Indonesia, where I am almost done with my twenty-sixth year surrounded by whiny, litigious trailer trash led by the best politicians money can buy.

Yeah, I live in Canada and don't have to learn a new lesson. Although I guess I now have to learn to be 'nice' the Canadians.

Beer anyone?

Wolfprophet26 Mar 2013 10:21 p.m. PST

Well. Now I know why I hear so much Spanish spoken in my town that it makes me feel the illegal immigrant!

Jerardad,

How exactly do you define old english and middle english?

This should be required reading for all of the "Germany could have won WW2 if only" morons.

A period map would be even better.

Klebert L Hall27 Mar 2013 6:34 a.m. PST

Old English has grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.
Middle English Has any one of those.

Oh, wait – I'm talking about the 20th century again.

An interesting analysis of relative GDP in WW2 here. Similar to Richard Overys in 'Why the Allies Won'.

Not a certainty at all, until 1942 at any rate.

onwar.com/articles/0302.htm

The behaviour of Soviet GDP is also interesting, when considered in relation to output of war material.

So, that's where the Pennsylvania Dutch came from.

Klebert L Hall28 Mar 2013 8:04 a.m. PST

Not a certainty at all, until 1942 at any rate.

Yeah, it really was a certainty.
Even w/o fighting the US, Germany, Italy, and Japan were fighting the first, second, and fourth largest nations in the world, plus a bunch of other places more their own size. Megalomaniacs are by nature imbeciles.

Sergeant Paper30 Mar 2013 9:22 a.m. PST

Hmmm… Nigeria.

John the Greater03 Apr 2013 12:15 p.m. PST

Born in New Zealand, now living in Austria. I speak German, so I am OK. Don't know why I never picked up New Zealandese, but it is not too late I suppose.
