Perhaps a (very) silly question as no doubt mules come in all colours and sizes. Was there any predominant colour of the mules which were used in the British/Indian Army? I have a battery of Screw Guns to paint up for my NW Frontier Field Force, using the Mountain Battery on the march set from Old Glory. |

I paint my mules GW scorched brown, and under the belly and inside the leg areas with kommando khaki, I've painted them grey and not being happy with the results I achieved!

Looking at the size of the ears and the length of the legs, I still think it's a mule. But it sure made an ass of itself

Many thanks. I think mostly brown, as per Kipling's poem Screw Guns: "Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin' cool, I walks in my old brown gaiters, along o' my old brown mule, With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets – Tss! Tss!" with perhaps the odd grey one for good luck. |

@Pedrobear: nice collection of pack mules, though I feel sorry for the one in the air. Stupid owner. I'd be tempted to paint mules a bit 'softer' than any horses. No blacks or palominos, no appaloosas or paints. lots and lots of various shades of brown, lightened with gray instead of white. |

@Pedrobear, since the Mule gets it's long ears from it's papa the donkey I don't understand how the length of the ears points to the suspended creature being a mule. Also I seriously doubt that there is enough weight on the back half of that wagon to lift a 800lbs mule off the ground. but most importantly the tail is a good determining guide. The mule's tail is like a horse's the brush starts at the start of the tail whereas on a donkey the bush starts halfway down the tail. |

The length of the ears in the animal is between that of a donkey and a horse, and its limbs are longer than that of a donkey. Most importantly, everyone knows donkeys only ever come in grey colour
