How interested are you in post-tournament reports from TMP members who participated?

(On a scale of 1 to 5…)

Since I don't have any interest in tournaments, I'd have to say a zero.

Tournament reports, as opposed to individual battle reports, usually don't provide me with enough information to actually get any "use" out of it.

I have all of the Slingshot magazines, for example, and the tournament reports are typically either: one person's series of battle reports, done half-baked because he cannot remember all of the opponents' army lists and felt too rushed to write it down; or simply a list of name, rank, and army/

I once wrote a person who blogged about a tournament and asked him if he would allow the tournament winner to blog his tournament winning advice. That was pretty interesting. On some of the 40K forums people talk about their list, how they used it, and why it worked for an "all-comers" tournament format. WWPD does tournament pre- and post-reports, but my interest with them lies in their discussions on how they are going to use elements of the list (pre-) and how it did or did not work out as they expected (post-). When they get lazy and are just "this is my list, blah, blah, blah…" it is actually boring because it provides no informational value.

I think that is the key part. What value does the report bring. The same can be said of single battle reports too, but sometimes eye candy is enough to make them worthwhile to "read". What is typically lacking on forums are good analytical discussions. Why don't other rules have "Mathhammer"?

So, generally the reports are a 1, but sometimes you get some that are 2+.

I like them in AAR format. As in A beat B then lost to C, not at all.

As I've just posted a link to my report on the Alton Pairs tournament, I better pop my head up above this particular parapet grin

My guess would always be that most people only have a passing interest … good pictures, formulae that generate interesting games … that sort of thing.

So I try to be brief. I think it is worth giving a glimpse, though – so people who might be interested in attending a future event can get a flavour and be better informed …

I fully understand the general sentiments above, however (I'm very much in the 'it depends' camp, myself)

2 if they are well photographed. I normally skip over items with an interest of 2 of 5.

Probably 1 without photos.

You could ask the same question about many kinds of posts here and would find a large percentage of people saying that they don't have much interest in that particular kind of post. It doesn't mean though that the threads are of no value.

Not going to read tournament reports especially avidly myself, but I like seeing them here for the variety they bring. I'd rate my interest as a 3.

Cheers,
Aaron

Sometimes they're news items rather than articles. I generally think of the DBA tournament reports (or any other under a page) in Slingshot as the former rather than the latter.

Most of the longer tournament reports tend to be 1-2 paras on tactics or AAR, with maybe something on the tournament format and whether it worked or not.

I think both formats work, as long as expectations are set. With the "news format", however, you need to realise that it's going to be of limited interest outside the community playing that particular ruleset.

Anytime Madaxeman does a tournament report, two thumbs and two big toes up. His reports rock.

TMPWargamerabbit25 Mar 2013 6:27 p.m. PST

Text and photos to show the event and actions. Give a 3-4 range. If just text…. a 1

Thanks for posting another board IDed to turn off.

No interest at all, but don't let me stop you.

I always thought they were the most boring parts of Slingshot, and that's why I dropped my subscription.

Some valid points above; I can certainly ignore them like I ignore other things I am not interested in, so post what you want.

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian26 Mar 2013 5:50 a.m. PST

Bucking the trend, I'd rate it at a 4 or 5, assuming the reports included some photos and analysis of what forces and tactics did and didn't work for people. I don't really play tourneys myself and I find the mindset quite alien, but that just makes it more interesting to read about them. Reports on the Privateer Press War Machine/Hordes stuff would be at the top of my list, followed closely by Malifaux – neither of which get a ton of thread time around here despite having quite active fan bases on other forums.

bruntonboy26 Mar 2013 6:26 a.m. PST

Another vote for zero.

Some of the Tournament reports in Slingshot are entertaining, but really, to anyone who hasn't played in the one in question they are generally fairly uninteresting.

1.

Zero. Zip. Nada.

Chef Lackey Rich Fezian26 Mar 2013 2:31 p.m. PST

Come to think of it, add X-Wing to the list I'd like to see. There are certainly tourneys for that, and more to come.

I don't play in 'em, but why not ? If someone organises an event an AAR of some sort would be interesting.

Be nice to have the game stats and if it's a knock-out then also a full AAR on the final game.
