I took some Gothic armies to Martin Smith's splendid DBA Pairs event at the weekend.
(mostly Lurkio figures in this group with support from Black Hat/Gladiator) In the pairs format each player takes a matched pair of armies, and plays that pair every other round. Other rounds it is the other player's pair (so in the 6 game format you play your own game 3 times and other people's in the other 3 ) When it is your pair, the other player gets to pick which army to use (which encourages balanced games, generally) .. otherwise the game was standard DBA 2.2
It worked very well and gave us all a good day out. More pictures on Ancients on the Move The event is part of the UK DBA League sponsored by The Society of Ancients More links etc. on the blog
many thanks all involved

For DBA, I really like the matched pairs idea for tourneys. I also really like the one day campaigns. There are some things that are feasible with DBA that would be a logistical nightmare with most other games. I suppose Mighty Armies or Impetus might make some inroads into this space eventually, though. Doug |

Third year for this format, right? Did they make any changes? |

@ Editor
I think it has remained the same (I missed last year due to a crowded calendar so I can only answer from memory) @ Doug
Agreed: I could just about see it being viable with Armati – but I think it is more common with DBA to have/collect compatible armies (talking 15mm, too
) but the internet facilitates buddying up these days so there may be quite a few pairs of player with 2 pairs between them
Seems to work anyway. As I say on the blog, I quite like the way it encourages armies you might not see so much otherwise. Thanks Phil |

Nice looking armies, makes me want to paint something! The Roman standards were a nice touch. |

I believe this format is the best way to play DBA as all games are between historical matchups. It is more fun when not a civil war with same army on both sides. This format also allows a player to bring any size armies, 6mm – 75mm, as they only fight each other. |
