Does anybody else play these? They are a derivative of General de Brigade for the SYW. I have played several sets, including Blackpowder, & I think that these are by far the best. They are quick to play, use a standard basing system, & seem to give a good simulation.
They need a second edition as they are a little sloppy, but not excessively. They could also use more extensive troops lists.
They have become our groups standard rules & we have a growing list of house rules & embellishments. Anyone have experience & suggestions regarding them to share?

John,

I am trying them as well. I would love to see your house rules.

Thank you.

I sent them to you. We felt that artillery was too powerful so we limited each side to only 1 battery of 3 stands (6 guns), let it run out of ammo on a 2D6 result of 2 or 3, & have it taking only 3 hits instead of 4. All experimental rules. Only the ammo rule & size limitation rule may be necessary.
The troop lists are interpolated from Pro Gloria & Blackpowder.
We play in 15mm.

In my eternal search for the "Ultimate Horse & Musket Ruel Set" (TM) I've bought and played them. The experience was a little irritating in that they reminded me of 70's and 80's rule sets, with things like "exactly when do you want to open fire at charging enemy?" All of which I'd moved away from. I liked the morale rules and the commandand control was easy.

I'd still prefer something like "Rank & File" even if it's not as 'realistic', but that's personal choice.

I am an old & ex Empire player. They seem like a streamed down version.
Shooting at chargers is a die roll. On a 1 the infantry get rattled & fire ineffectively (long range modifiers.) On a 6 they let loose at point blank. The charger then takes a morale test to close with each hit being a -1 DRM.
Infantry have a hard time closing (very historical for SYW) & they have a chance of stopping a cavalry charge with musketry (also historical) but if the cuirassier get in then it is a slaughter,

Rank & File is also fun. It is 1 step simpler. But we can play DKK very fast now.

JPK really interested in your rule amendments but do not seem to be able to reach you on the e mail address you provided above. Is there another e mail I can reach you on ?

Caubeen and I gamed this weekend with Die Kreigkunst. Generally, I liked the rules. As with many sets, fire can be so effective that it is hard to attack. The combination of die rolls and charts leads to a great variety, or say disparity, of impacts/results both for fire and melee. I lost as Prussian largely if not completely as a result of the die rolls -- and for me, that is OK. Current rules we use for Napoleonics has simultaneous movement and so you have to write orders and deal with the difficulty of simultaneous movement and fire. So this back and forth from each side on each phase was refreshing. Rolling for initiative at the start of each turn was interesting. For the most part, rules are nice. We did not modify the rules for this first game, but I see why you might. Thansk for your house rules; we will review them as we go forward. But in short, excited about this set of rules and the SYW.

If you look at British Grenadier for the AWI, which is also by the Partizan Press / Dave Brown group, then there is an added concept of disruption points. I suppose if you want to decrease casualties you could make the first hit from each fire a disruption point which could be removed by a moral test or movement expenditure. DP could reduce firing or morale like regular casualties. Forgot how DP actually work in British Grenadier.
DKK has great basic game mechanics which can be fine tuned to one's own tastes.

My understanding is that with iron ramrods & platoon firing it was much harder to close than in the War of Spanish Succesion. Infantry mostly did not close when attacking infantry in the open. In Napoleonic times this changed somewhat so that there were more melees. Perhaps the greater use of column was the reason.

Good points JPKelly. Guess the Prussians move 4 inches, fire full and hope to roll better than opponents.
