Hello. I'm looking to join a group or a club in or around the Camberley area of Surrey. I've moved to the area from London just over a year ago and am still settling in. I'm coming back to wargaming after being part of a boardgame/RPG club for many years so I have a small-ish collection of figures but I'm painting up loads.

The games I play the most are Flames of War, I Ain't Been Shot Mum and 7TV. I have a collection of 15mm Napoleonics but haven't got a preferred set of rules for that era. Also in my collection are a small number of 1/3000 scale WW2 warships for General Quarters and some Traveller themed spaceships which are in my lead pile awaiting a paint job.

I'll generally play any type of game and am keen to get back into wargaming.

Hi, and welcome to the area. Here are some options.

The Guildford Games Club, which I attend, is mostly scifi/fantasy but has a few FOW players and many who play boardgames. We meet Mondays at the Park Barn Centre in Guildford. Please pop along if your interested. link is the best way to get in touch. Let us know before you come down so we can try and sort a game.

There is also the Guildford Wargames Club, guildford-wargames.org.uk/info/, who are more historically oriented.

Also the Farnborough Wargmes Society, fwgs.org.uk.

Additionally The Games Shop in Aldershot, has gaming on the weekend and some evenings. Again mostly fantasy/scifi/card games and boardgames

Several from the Guildford Games Club attend on Sunday for wargames/boardgames, etc.

The Alder Valley Gamers also lurk in the area and I know at least some used to play FOW. However their website seems to be down currently. avgas.org.uk

If you need any additional info let me know.

Best,

Rob

The Guildford Wargames Club that Doc Gigawatts provided seems to be dead but we meet on Monday evenings at the St Johns Centre in Merrow from about 7pm…. Mostly historical but pretty open to most things!

Hi

As Rob and Alistair have said, Guildford Wargames club meets in Merrow on a Monday night and has been going since 1978…

The correct link is:

guildford-wargames.org.uk/info

although I haven't been that good at updating games played recently.

We play almost anything and a number of people like the Too Fat Lardies systems and play IABSM for WW2.

Drop me a line at mike@blackhat.co.uk before you come along and we can arrange a game.

thanks
Mike

Just remembered, there is also the Camberley Games Club, I assume they are still going: link

They used to play mostly GW games, but my knowledge is way out of date.

Here is some possible contact details for Alder Valley: link

Cheers for those recommendations. I did contact the Camberley Games Club when I first moved into the area but they're pretty much all GW and Magic the Gathering and after a few exchanged emails it was apparent that they didn't do anything I was interested in (and vice versa) and that I was also double the age of the average member.

One other club on the list (which shall remain nameless) I tried but it's too cliquey and very difficult to get into a game or else find players for one so I've given up on them.

But some good recommendations and I'll write to some of them shortly. Cheers.

Now there's a surprise, a wargames club that is a bit too cliquey :-)

Unfortunately, I think some clubs do suffer that as the members have known each other for years, so it is all in-jokes and shared memories. But keep going and within 20 years you will be accepted :-)

But I share your experiences as I try to find a suitable club near me – currently playing at home with some friends, but always keen to find a bigger social group for my gaming interests.

you've also got WAR who meet Wednesday nights 6 til 10.30 Winnersh Community Hall. Its 30 min drive from Camberley, and we have members who come from Oxford and Basingstoke.

There's around a hundred of us so if you make the effort to come along a few times you'll get a game, have an open mind and you'll be playing someone something within 2 visits.

I was a walk-in and have never looked back.

Drop me a note and if I'm around I'll make sure you get a game. Flames of War is very very popular. 7TV is also played, along with various naval periods, and a number of people play 15mm Napoleonics.

We have an openday planned for Sunday 28th April. I think Flames of War is being played along with Saga

Richard, that is a great invitation but, alas, Wednesday is the one night I can't do as I'm pre-committed to another non-gaming activity. Once again, thanks to everyone for giving me suggestions.

If you drop me a line off-list I'd love to give you a game of FoW.

It's not popular with my lot, but I'm getting quite into it.

Guthroth…funnily enough, I was going to write to Staines Wargamers soon as they are the closest to where I live. FoW isn't my #1 game, but it is one I do play so it doesn't matter if most of the club aren't into it. I'll drop you a line soon as it's likely I won't be up until after Easter.
