Hi,

Can anyone please recommend a few good movies dealing with turn of the century / early 20th century naval stuff? I'm thinking Russo-Japanese and WWI in particular.

There's a Russian movie called 'Admiral' about White Russian leader Admiral Kolchak, that opens with a small battle in the Baltic Sea during WWI. But that's about it for that movie.

'Shout at the Devil' is a Roger Moore/Lee Marvin movie that has a Hollywood version of the hunt for the Konigsburg in East Africa during the first world war. The ship stays sheltered most of the time, no open water action.

Land that Time Forgot is a Doug McLure movie featuring a German U-boat that discovers a land where dinosaurs still prowl. Great pulpy, B-movie action!

'African Queen' is more small-boat fun as Humphrey Bogart and Kate Hepburn take the war to the Germans on Lake Tangayika.

There's a new German movie called 'Men of the Emden' about the crew of SMS Emden, a German commerce raider that was active in the Pacific and Indian Oceans at the start of WWI.

That's about all i can think of off the top of my head.

Oh, just remembered one more: Reilly, Ace of Spies, a British mini-series. Not directly naval, but Reilly is involved in espionage activity related to the Japanese capture of Port Arthur, and infiltrates German dockyards to get plans for German warships.

There is a Japanese film about the battle of Tsushima starring Tofiro Mishune as Togo and a mini-series that has very cool combat scenes. Sorry, don't remember the names of either.

that's the one Shagnasty suggested.

I remember having seen it many moons ago! But really I do not remember anything!
