Following on from a the last Got Mitt Uns play reports we come to one of the iconic matchups of the Thirty Years War, one of Adolfus Gustavus' Swedish Brigades against Father Tilly's Imperial Tercio. I had intented to do sample 1 on 1 Breitenfeld and Lutzen engagements but the summary and Breitenfeld fight alone has run to 8 pages! Lutzen will be done in a separate PDF.

The PDF PDF link runs two simulations of using the Swedish Brigade in a stand up fight against an Imperial Tercio. Both units have the same Training Level and Morale. Even so, it is not an even fight as the Swedes have Salvo, artillery and more Officers so I expect the Swedes to win the Brietenfeld engagement in the end.

In the first engagement the Brigade deploys in its shallow wedge and reserve. The Brigade is almost twice as wide as the Imperials which was a concern about the fire arcs and range of the wing Squadron's Musketeers, and that there wouldn't enough firepower facing the central mass of Imperial pikes.

The second engagement suppositions that the 6 rank Musketeers can fire and retire through the also 6 rank Pikemen to reload behind them. The formation is reduced to the width of the Tercio fully fronted with Musketeers. The relative shallowness of the two arms and their level of training makes it a possible drill.

The second part (hopefully it will be shorter than the first) will have the Brigade advancing over an obstacle lined with Musketeers supported by the Tercio. The result should be for a more even match up.

Later tests will look at commanded Musketeer platoons interlacing cavalry squadrons and then cavalry vs foot regiments.
