Here's a couple of test paints I did a while back, AIP Germans and French.

Corporal: Sadly, mine don't look anywhere near as nice as yours do.

I didn't realize they did those… Very nice painting.

… and I had pretty much decided that my WWI project for next year would be plastic but 20mm … Suddenly … am I sure … ?

Hmmm … Inspiring stuff, Steve …

Thanks, guys. I'm pruning most the 54mm stuff from my collection, but at least documenting what I did first with some photos.

Steve

Nicely done! thumbs up I toyed with doing skirmish WWI in 54mm but nobody else was interested. We're doing 28mm instead. I do my larger battles in 1/72 my preferred scale for almost everything. grin

Thanks,

John

They are very nice indeed. I did mine in 'toy soldier' style – all gloss varnish and mad staring eyes…

Yes, you can get 54mm tanks, at a price.

For large battles I found 20mm plastics a better bet, but a few battalions of 54mm stuff is fun to have around. We use them for Funny Little wars.

Really nice, the way you have photographed them make them almost look like flats

I wrote them an email some years back regarding machine gun crews. respomse was an emphatic NOPE! THATS REALLY A SHAME TOO I have bags of french and german (latewar) would love to do a "garden game, dig trenches with spoons and garden shovels and make little sand bags like tea bags. yeah, I thought about that. everyone thought I was mad.

Yeah, I drew the same reaction awhile back. I finally decided to do an end run around the problem by using what IS available, which are WWII machine guns. Fortunately, Tamiya and others sell a lot of equipment sets; I look for MG models that are not too different from their WWI predecessors and say close enough is close enough. For crew, I cut the rifles or whatever away from kneeling figures. Admittedly, my task is made somewhat easier by the fact that I do only 1914 forces, so there are no LMGs, etc., to worry about--just 1 HMG-type each for the Brits and Germans (and French when I get around to converting FFL or later-war figures).

I'm sure this approach would make the purists cringe, but they don't have to play in my games, either.
