A museum is a monument to an often-overlooked theater of
the Civil War, the Far West.

So, the photo is of an 1875 Gatling gun. grin

All I had ever read about California's role was the parties the officers had before they resigned their commissions in the pre-war Army and headed back to Virginia.

What about the Bay Watch babes? What role did they play?

There is a very nice Lincoln Memorial in Redlands CA, roughly halfway between LA and Palm Springs. It's connected (administratively, not physically) with the city library, i believe. It has a collection of CW books and memoribilia, and, last I heard, a CW Roundtable meets there.

I am ashamed to say that the first thing that came to my mind was "Bill and Ted go to Gettysburg"….

Not much compared to back east but a nice smattering.

They provided several regiments to the Arizona/New Mexico campaign and lots of Gold for the Unions coffers. I think there was a California Brigade in the Army of the Potomac
made up of miners who had returned from the gold rush.

When my father visited the then-Soviet Union he was amused to see that Soviet text books said that Russia supported the Union in the Civil War by sending a fleet to the U.S. -- which is true: they sent a flotilla to overwinter in San Francisco where it would not be ice-bound. But that's really making a virtue of a necessity, or at least a convenience.

I've been to Ft Tejon, but never knew about Wilmington. There's also a Monument to The Mormon Battalion in the Mex-American War outside Devore.

What is really overlooked is the financial support California and Nevada gave to the Union. So much gold and silver.

Jeff, there's a bit more. The "Great Game" also played a part in Russia's support, given the Confederacy's leanings toward Britain. And it lead to the Alaska Purchase. If you're selling land next to someone you dislike, pick an "enemy of your enemy."

The 'California' regiments in the AoP consisted of
some Californians who were in the East, but LOTS of
Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, in particular) and New York
residents.

This blog (about miniatures !) discusses a couple.

Thanks for linking to my blog.

I painted the Philadelphia/California Brigade just before christmas last year. I thought it was a realy nice brigade to paint as there was all sorts of regiments in the Brigade, both Irish and Zouaves.

Dalauppror: Very nicely done! Your blues seem very intense, but perhaps that's due to the photography/lighting.

Dalauppror28 Mar 2013 2:35 p.m. PST

Thanks Donlowry !

one part photo/light but also a part that I probably used a to blue colour for the uniforms.

Best regards Michael

There were also various campaigns and small battles against Indians in Northern California and Southern Oregon during the time of the Civil War, not to mention the aforementioned units that were involved in the campaign in New Mexico. They called it the California Column for a reason! :) Officially I believe there are about 10-15 engagements or skirmishes in California during the Civil War. None were very large, but they occurred. My reference books are in storage but if pressed I can provide the names of each. Most I believe were against Indians but some were against Confederate supporters and guerrilla types.
