Hi folks, I've just taken delivery on my new airbrush, with a view to painting up a whole load of 1/72 WW2 AFV stuff.

I will want to put a decent matt finish on the models, and Im not sure what would be the best product for me to use.

It has to go through the airbrush 0.2 or 0.4 needle, and it has to be a UK source, so e.g. Dullcote wont be available.

Ive seen posts here for Daler and w&N, but these posts referred to brush on techniques – has anyone tried them through an airbrush please?

Any advice would be welcome.

Simples.

Vallejo Model Air Matt Varnish.

I'll send you my invoice.

PS Dullcote is totally available here!

I've put W&N and Daler through an airbrush and got a totally flat finish. The models were going matt as soon as the varnish hit them. I'm a total novice when it comes to air brushing but I sprayed on a warm dry day at 35psi which I have no idea if that is high, medium or low pressure.

Get it right and you'll get an amazing flat finish.

I'd go with Timmo- I use W&N – though I brush on rather than airbrush for my 15mm WW2 and Moderns. The finish is very flat.

Thanks chaps. And thanks to whoever corrected my title typo – I spent half an hour last night trying to find a way to correct it, but failed miserably.

Did you thin the Daler before spraying Timmo?

Happy to receive your invoice 10th Foot, just bring it round…..

Just use matt paint to paint the model. No need for any "finish".

MArgard, these AFVs are for wargaming – they are going to be handled. Also, the weathering process uses a satin varnish protective coat to keep it off the matt paint….

I must adsmit to having little success with rattle can Dull-cote, despite vigorous shaking, keeping it warm and any amount of incense laden incantations !

I've heard good things about the Vallejo model air varnish though.

I have wargamuing models painted just with matt paint that are over 30 years old. Unvarnished and their paint work is still fine.

dullcote through the airbrush is fine, I dilute with isoprophanol and apply several coats.

1815Guy,

Yes, with artist grade white spirit. You have to experiment though. You want it thin enough to go through the brush but if you get too much the finish will stay satin and not go matt.

It's fine to paint with matt paints but if you want to add decals they are best over a gloss surface and you need to varnish after they've been applied.

Oh the other thing to watch is not to spray Daler over decals as it attacks them. You need to put a water based varnish over to protect them. To be Honest W&N's water based varnish is a lot easier to spray. But I prefer DR for brush painting.

+1 for the Vallejo Matte Varnish.

Sprays just fine at 20 or 30 psi, undiluted through a 0.2 set-up.

Also works a treat when brushed on, so great for spot applications, repairs and touch-ups.

The best, most 'mattest' (?) finish l have ever used,
Is the rattle can from the Army Painter people.
Really good, and very matt!
